I was going to suggest something similar. However:
I would hate to see people being able to chat in various colors. That would get very annoying.
In-game trading sounds good to me. Out-of-game trading doesn't seem like it's all that vital, imo.
The request trade, invite, remove friend, etc options don't need to be next to every friend. You could save a lot of screen real estate by putting those buttons at the bottom. You would select a friend, then click the button at the bottom (or top, or side, or wherever it looks best). I don't want to have to flip (or scroll) through several pages to find certain friends, just because I have 15 friends. I want to see as many friends as possible per page (or scroll).
Amazing idea, but I don't understand world rank. I would also suggest removing trading. Someone could Xray diamonds and then everyone in all of minecraft would have diamonds. There could also be clients developed to steal items from players while trading.
I might have missed something, but trading would have no point if your items are different on each server.
And if you're supposed to have a universal inventory system, that would not only destroy the mojang servers to have to track, and you could easily create your own server and spawn in diamonds, then go on another server with a bunch of diamonds. BTW aside from my criticism I genuinely think this is a good idea.
Player 1 needs torches because night is falling and his house will be destroyed by mobs if he doesn't find some.
Player 2 needs glass to complete his mob-trap
Player 1 will trade 20 blocks of glass to Player 2 in return for some torches.
People can only trade single-player items.
TurtleeyMC you get
People can then cheat in items.
Great Idea however.
No, it would actually make server economys work 10x better, you have to each put items in your side of the grid and then press okay to accept what the other person is offering(like in pokemon) that way you don't give someone your items and have to trust them to be honest and give you what they promised because it's automatic
There are only two things that won't work with this. Unfortunately, due to the way setting servers for multiplayer works, the "invite to your world" idea just simply impossible to accomplish. As for the item trading, that is easily ruined by programs like INVedit and TooManyItems. You can never be sure if someone hacked the items that you're trading for.
And now single player runs on a multiplayer server and you can half do this in vanilla using the open to LAN option, you could easily change it to right clicking a friend in the list and selecting invite friend
I can't see trading working since Creative servers would be able to trade with Survival servers. I suppose you could make it so servers can make a network of servers that they'll be able to trade with, but the moment one of the server gets a plugin that can be abused the entire network's economy is ruined.
Now this is the spot. I need this in Minecraft! There's not a somewhat good way to trade, so that sucks. But if they add this, I will thank you and Mojang for being able to have friends and everything else you say. And you deserve diamonds and food.

It's Rose again.
I've got the most amazing idea, but I'm not going to be naggy and ask everyone to photoshop examples for me so here it is.
Imagine Minecraft had a more functional online system (More customizable, more personality, more features, more friends etc...) You could have a friends list of all the people you know play Minecraft, you could chat with these friends you could connect to their world to assist with building, you could invite them to your world for assistance, You could trade your in-game items with them via a transaction feature.
These are only pictures (but good ones at that).
Hopefully any member of Mojang will notice this thread.
The new menu, featuring the "Online" button
The friends list, a players icon will be by default the facial region of the skin
The options a player can set for online play, With the feature to direct upload a skin from the game
The trading system between 2 players
*Sorry, the trading grid will be bigger and the grid on the right is the other persons inventory.
Wait? That is not Notch! But simply it will NOT Happen. Because Trading just bit sucks. Just make a mod and i will give some Pork Chops and Diamond and , , , and ...
Trading will either be incredibly OP or just abused. Sadly, some people use the "cheats" that were added with LAN servers. With that, they could go into creative on a "survival" tagged world and (in some ways) bypass any creative --> survival trading.
Ex. is in a survival with cheats. He uses /gamemode 1. He is now in creative. He spawns in and gives it to who is in survival or hardcore.

Don't take the critisism too harshly (not that you do) but they're either just trollin or tryig to give constructive critisism.
Keep up the good work, the more attention this idea gets, the more likely Notch will go to the effort of adding this feature!
Great Idea however.
Should see this!
I have nothing more to say about all of this.

Check the wiki page on Upcoming Features. Here is a link, it is somewhat confirmed. http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Upcoming_features
