I started playing MC in around September of last year (so around the time of Alpha 1.1.0) and I LOVED IT. I would explore deep caves with my friends in multiplayer,
Still very much a part of the game. I think it might be you who's losing your touch for Minecraft. There are some games you can play forever. Most games actually do get old after a little while. Would you watch the same movie over and over again every day?
slay monsters with relatively hard to acquire weapons,
I don't know what the complaint is here. Weapons are still in the game. You don't spawn with a diamond sword. Villages don't make swords or bows for you.
build epic castles/bases/outposts,
Still a major feature of Minecraft 1.8
and utilize glitches
You were creative then, why can't you continue to be creative now? And if you like tinkering and exploiting so much, you really should look into downloading some mods. If what you're saying is correct about Minecraft, then mods are the only way you're going to have a satisfying experience, no matter what direction Mojang goes.
Beta rolled around, and I just thought it was amazing, the biomes, the everything, everything looked so much better, and I loved it, all the way up until around 1.6. For me, that's when Minecraft started to become less sandbox based, and start to submit to the more role-playing feel.
Is there not a creative mode now that works as a sandbox? I guess you're looking for a sweet spot somewhere between Sandbox and Role-Playing, and the game's current incarnation is just a notch off. Nothing wrong with that, but I hope you just realize that there's no way to recapture the old magic.
Experience
I don't know how this is a complaint about 1.8. If anything it's an anticipation of a complaint, since experience doesn't even do anything. You might as well ignore it. Why not call these the good old days right now?
and Hunger? What? That, to me, was the last straw - it was just too much.
How could you not have seen hunger coming? I think it was obvious from the start that a game that features food should have some sort of hunger system. And it's not like Hunger is an overwhelming game factor.
The abandoned villages/mineshafts/ruins/strongholds were really cool, yeah, but you could literally walk in and say "New base." and have it be complete with housing, forging, and even a complete farm.
Not exactly. For one thing, not every map has a village within walking distance of your first day. So you've got to start the same way as always, by building a base, and then you can go explore to find more bases. I like building bases too, but sometimes it really is handy to get one or two new bases with most of the work already done for you.
But also about the villages, I've not found a village that I didn't want to tinker with and improve. That's the thing I love about the villages, is that I can take them over and call them my new bases, and continue to improve them, and build roads and railroads between them and my own player-made bases.
Even as an avid RPG and MC Survival player, I think 1.8 was pushing it for me. And it's only going to get worse as they continue to milk the game towards the RPG nuts out there, and eventually submit to mainstream gaming. (maybe that's taking it a little far... but that's my honest opinion).
You use "Mainstream Gaming" as if it's a bad word. You have to look at it this way: Minecraft started as an indy game, and there will always be an indy aspect to it. Maybe some version(s) of Minecraft will graduate to Mainstream platforms, and in the process they might strip away some features. But if you were really interested in Minecraft as an indy game, there will always be the modding community, which will always be Indy.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.
Exact opposite for me. Minecraft was slowly getting boring before the update, I even took a break from the town I founded in a SMP server simply because Minecraft was getting boring (Wondering how my residents are doing... hm..).
1.8 rolled along, and my interest flared up again. Probably going to return to the server once it upgrades.
Though, it will probably lose its spark eventually, and I'll take another break until a new update comes along.
I'm a newbie to Minecraft, having jumped aboard in 1.7.3. I haven't had the chance to see what it was like before, but I'm adjusting to the new hunger bar, I don't really like the NPC villages (yet), and I think endermen are cool. :biggrin.gif: Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it, Notch programs what he thinks is fun into the game. If we think it's got potential, we pay to get access to the latest version as-is and with no guarantees of updates (though, thankfully, if there are updates, Notch is willing to add those on for free). This is Notch's game, so in the end, the Minecraft that gets released will be the one that he likes.
It's wonderful that he lets us chip in and opine on what we think would be a great Minecraft. From what I've read, he's already applied some of what the community has suggested in previous versions. However, I don't think Minecraft can "lose its touch" as long as Notch doesn't feel it's lost its touch, because it's his brainchild. Now, if we feel like it's not something we care to keep up with (I'm a long way from that, personally), we only made a one-time payment, so we can set it aside as easily as any other computer game.
TL;DR: Minecraft's "touch" is whatever Notch says it is.
The reality is that while I talk about the old days a ton. I mean, seriously, a ton, I actually am fond of the way Minecraft is going, but after a while I'm going to start treating pre-1.8 minecraft and post-1.8 minecraft as two different games, which I'll probably both play -- probably in an order dependent on what's more interesting to me at the time. I have my Alpha jars around for a reason, and I still like playing them. Same with Indev, I still like playing it even if the game world is 256x256x64 in size.
Hey all. I'm just gonna get it out of my system real quick: Minecraft is kinda losing its effect. On me, at least.
I started playing MC in around September of last year (so around the time of Alpha 1.1.0) and I LOVED IT. I would explore deep caves with my friends in multiplayer, slay monsters with relatively hard to acquire weapons, build epic castles/bases/outposts, and utilize glitches to make our lives easier. Those were the real days for me. I loved that old Minecraft. :smile.gif:

For me, that's when Minecraft started to become less sandbox based, and start to submit to the more role-playing feel. Whilst I agree that Minecraft needed a bit of incentive, I think it would have been milking it to add any more features after 1.7-ish. 1.8, for me, was when I had decided that Minecraft had lost its effect completely on me.
For me, Minecraft used to be a sandbox-based adventure game where you could literally do anything. Now, it's a role-playing game. Experience and Hunger? What? That, to me, was the last straw - it was just too much. The abandoned villages/mineshafts/ruins/strongholds were really cool, yeah, but you could literally walk in and say "New base." and have it be complete with housing, forging, and even a complete farm. Anyway, that's my honest opinion. Please don't cuss me out and tell me to downgrade, because I already have. I'm currently playing off Minecraft Alpha v. 1.2.3_01 (the update right before Beta). So let's not shoot my opinion down, I just want to know if there's anyone out there who agrees with me. :smile.gif:
TL;DR: Minecraft, to me at least, has lost its magic. It's way too RPG-oriented now.
You do realize that when making a world you can make it so that no structures are added, right? The EXP does nothing as of now, so you can't really judge it can you? The hunger system is the only thing that required talking of, and that can be solved by making it on peaceful. What, you say? You don't want to play on peaceful? I guess that is understandable. In that case you should just kill one of the thousands of animals right outside your door, or you could eat off the farm you most likely made before the hunger system was made.
So far, every point you made has been debunked by the nature of Minecraft, which is that you can play it whatever way you want. Never have I seen something added that couldn't be worked around.

Also, don't tell people to not disagree with you if you want to make your opinion known to the forums. If you want to do that, then make a youtube video and takeout any comment that disagrees.
I'm not getting tired of the game as I'm getting tired at which the speed Mojang operates at. It's cripplingly slow. They need to focus more on making Minecraft a completely fleshed out game and less on getting Cobalt and Scrolls started.
So... you've been playing a $20 game for more than a year, and are complaining that the game is no longer fun for you. While you list the 'changes' to the game as causing you to be unhappy, I think you should consider just how many hours you have played this game.
My suggestion: When the game is eventually released, it will have extensive mod support. Someone will have a mod that 'rewinds' the game back to a previous version, so you can go back to 'how you liked it.'
I think these threads have lost their touch. Stop making them they are so pointless.

That was the start of make the game boringly easy.
Then month after month of no new enemy mobs that made me have to turn to mods
