Wonderland (v1.1, Curiouser and curiouser) (Creation 8/10):
If you're familiar with Alice in Wonderland, you will have a beautiful time exploring this one. For me it's only odd.
Just want you to know I'm seriously considering making a part of the story a little more linear and less optional.
Obviously, you might enjoy the map if you are a fan of the Wonderland lore. But I did try to make it understandable even if you don't. One thing I might re-do is the notes. Instead of numbering them, I could have said "read the Cheshire Cat's note" and "read the Red Queen's note". That way folks wouldn't feel as awkward about missing some. I -did- put the chests out of the way on purpose. The only real value is the armor/weapon upgrades. But it's true the notes reinforce the storyline that creatures are attacking Wonderland and the characters went into hiding.
Definitely something to think about in later maps.
Regarding the audio narration, my initial intention was to make a mod so that you would play records at each checkpoint and hear the story. But every time I was about to start, there would be another patch and MCP needed to be updated. So I never did it. I will probably revisit this idea when Minecraft is stable (November?). I think it's a nice way to play without having to 'pause' the game and read a note. But it's not critical.
In my newer maps I try to include the narration sound files, a text file for each individual checkpoint, AND a readme file that contains all the checkpoint notes. So players can pick their poison.
Anyway - I'm glad you gave it another go. I am extremely happy with my tribute to one of my favorite themes. And I am glad you got some enjoyment out of it.
I just finished playing this map. I liked it. I got stuck on the minecart part, but I had a great time. The forest was tricky because I was playing at night, so I got a little lost. Nice job.

(btw - you need a LOST signature banner so folks can follow it to your AWESOME island!)
I lit the forest up with over 40 torches - it still isn't fully lit because I ran out - and I could not spot that record player anywhere =/
EDIT: I must say that I felt obligated to gather every wool block - Maybe make each colour indicate the difficulty of finding the chest? Then people can post high scores ("Oh I found all the sky blue wool but only two red wool...")
EDIT 2: You may want to replace that booster cart at the end with booster tracks :tongue.gif:

THANK YOU for the constructive feedback!!!
That forest chest is the #1 issue folks have....
Once you finish the maze proper, right before the sign that says you are leaving the 'safety' of the wood, look to your right. You should see a row of redstone torches leading directly to the tree with the chest. Look up. You have to go up a 2-square stair of leaves. I thought the row of redstone torches would help, but I guess not.
I'm definitely going to think about the wool idea. One of my 'challenges' was to find all of the hidden chests, but not all have records. So the colored wool might be good.
I am going to look at that final minecart stretch today!
Just finished playing -- I only saw it because you posted just above me in the maps list thread thingie.
I started on "easy" and then in the first room after the garden switched back to "peaceful." I switched back later, and then a bandersnatchjabberwocksnarkboojum creeper blew me and a big chunk of Tulgey Wood to smithereens, then I completed the map on peaceful. Even so, I wound up spooking myself once or twice, because I forgot I was safe!
In each new area I stopped and said, "wow." I am a big fan of the books, it is sad that anyone has missed out on their joys. Disney, Burton, American McGee have all put their spin on it, but the right reverend Charles Ludwig Dodgson's own words are still where my heart is.
I got all ten, and the only once had to backtrack (to find the caterpillar) when I saw sign 7 and hadn't seen 6 yet.
OH: wonderful use of chests, by the way! The dormouse was particularly charming.
If your other maps are anywhere near this charming, I will enjoy the rest of my afternoon immensely.
...and I may borrow some of your ideas when I make my next map. Those chests ... simply awesome.
I tend to go for dark themes, and I am imagining a cultic altar in a chest, or drawing out sigils within the squares.
It was 1.2.
I think the only bit that I didn't enjoy was the Tulgey wood -- though it is reasonable that that part be a bit harrowing. But it was so dark, and -- you may see a theme here -- I got lost. Add to that that it is very hard to doge baddies...
Weirdly, though, I love mazes. I think maze + dark + enemies might be too much for me. Any two of them.
But really, that's nitpicking. I actually wandered into the dim woods and said to myself, "This is awesome." I am a fan of forests, and built one in my map (well, a swamp, actually), and the dimness and menace of the place really spoke to me.
This looks a lot like American McGee's take on Alice (well, not AS creepy), so that's why I'm going to play it! :biggrin.gif:
I may leave a critique later on, if I remember.
I've never seen American McGee's version (other than a few screenshots), but I am still honored :wink.gif:
ALOT OF FUN
althrough i could not find the iron to make flint and steel
so i had to use invedit to get it >_>
i cheated, BUT IT WAS FUN
i missed the tree hole and walked right past it >_>
i love the voice recorded notes, it makes it feel like you're playing a story book. i also really liked the forrest part, mostly because it was genuinely scary and a bit difficult if you run out of torches like i did.. i got a pet doggy on the way and he died from creepers in the forrest. D:
my only real complaint is that there arent really many difficult parts besides the forrest, and theres not any hard to solve puzzles. but its the atmosphere of it that made it great, so thats ok.

Did you happen to play the newest released version 1.2, or did you have 1.1 from the old download?
Please do let me know if you found anything that could be made better (other than the Creeper risk, which is the bane of custom maps).
I'm going to check out your map (Crimson Asylum, http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/383088- ) asap!
Not sure if 'charming' is the right word, but I hope you enjoy them!!
I recently played another map that REALLY impressed me with the chests: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/294505-

My map will have a bonus dungeon made of obsidian and hidden by pistons
Creeper Spawners EVERYWHERE
Some hate Creepers in their maps. I say bring it on :biggrin.gif:

The flint and steel is hidden in the castle.
