The Sins of Our Fathers is the final novella in The Expanse series. It was released on March 15th, 2022.[2] Co-Author Ty Franck describes it as being a coda (conclusion) to the series, and that it will be about one of the "1300 chances [for humanity] to get it right",[3] as it will take place on one of the colony worlds following the events in Leviathan Falls.

Blurb

Through one of the gates, a colony stands alone. Their supplies are low. Their defenses, weak. The leadership is uncertain, and the community fragile. Huge alien beasts threaten the little they have left.

But the worst monsters are human, and the greatest dangers are the past they brought.[4]

Plot

After the collapse of the Ring network, a settlement of 436 people on the planet Jannah, including Filip Nagata, fight to protect themselves from the native creatures that threaten the settlement. An internal power struggle within the settlers also threatens the settlement in a more subtle way. Filip recognizes the eventual impact of the shifting of allegiances within the group and acts, with full awareness of the consequences of his actions.

Trivia

  • The title is a reference to the similar biblical phrase "Sins of the father" from Exodus, of how the consequences of sin can pass or be inherited from one generation to another over time.[5] It also refers to how violating the natural order of life can lead to divine judgment.
  • This novella was originally going to be titled Memory's Legion like the collection, but the publisher Orbit Books explained to the authors that selling the novella and the collection under the same name would lead to confusion.[6]
  • Filip’s ship name, Thomas the Rhymer, is a reference to the poet Thomas Rymer who coined the phrase “poetic justice” in the 17th century.[7]

Notes

  • Hatchette Book Group seems to be still using Memory's Legion as the name for this novella in places on their website which just adds to confusion.
