Trails & Tales update for Minecraft 1.20 introduced a couple of new types of blocks: Suspicious Sand and Suspicious Gravel. Both appear and function in a similar way, containing various artifacts, such as Pottery Sherds and Sniffer Eggs. Our guide will show you where to find Suspicious Sand in Minecraft, as well as provide you with tips on how to use it.

Where to Find Suspicious Sand in Minecraft
You’ll be able to find Suspicious Sand only in a handful of locations where it generates naturally. These locations include:
- In the buried rooms under desert temples.
- On the bottom of desert wells.
- Inside warm or cold ocean ruins.
- Inside the trail ruins.
This type of sand looks a bit rougher than normal sand, and the same goes for gravel blocks. I wasn’t able to mine these blocks with my usual tools, such as a pickaxe. When I tried, Suspicious Sand turned out to be extremely fragile and simply fell apart. However, there are other ways to work with it, which I go into below.
How to Use Suspicious Sand in Minecraft
If you want to safely extract artifacts from the Suspicious Blocks without breaking them, you need to use the Brush tool. Once I crafted it, I was finally able to brush the artifacts out of the sand and gravel. Actually, you can get several different items that generate randomly inside the Suspicious Blocks, including:
- Pottery Sherds
- Sniffer Eggs
- Sticks
- Emeralds
Once you find 4 Pottery Sherds, you can craft a Decorated Pot for your flowers. But note that it’s extremely fragile. As for Sniffer Eggs, these spawn Sniffer mobs that can sniff out unique decorative plants out of the moss blocks for your Decorated Pots.
Once you find your first Pottery Sherd, you’ll unlock the “Respecting the Remnants” advancement, while your first Sniffer Egg will grant you the “Smells Interesting” advancement.
