What is the Book of Dead Gods in Baldur’s Gate 3?

The Book of Dead Gods in BG3 is an item in the Dank Crypt that you can interact with to learn some lore, get a Ray of Enfeeblement scroll, and Inspiration. You’ll notice it on the shelf in the room, as shown in the picture above. Once you pick it up, you lockpick it from your inventory or read it to unlock it and get its rewards with the following skills:

  • Arcana (DC 15).
  • Strength (DC 15).
  • Class Specific Attempt (DC 10): Paladin, Sorcerer, Wizard, Berserker Subclass (Barbarian), Warlock, or Cleric.

Once you open it, you can attempt a Religion (Intelligence) check with a DC of 10 to get the Ray of Enfeeblement scroll. Furthermore, there’ll be a passive Investigation check, and if you succeed, you’ll learn that besides the book containing a list of all gods, three are crossed out. These are Myrkul, Bane, and Bhaal, otherwise known as the Dead Three.

Furthermore, if Shadowheart or Gale is in your party or your custom character has the Sage or Acolyte background, you’ll get inspiration. This is an excellent way to stack inspiration early since you’ll get one for each eligible character. For example, if you have both Shadowheart and Gale and your Tav is a Sage, you’ll get three stacks of inspiration.

That said, if you don’t have the above-mentioned classes in your party or high Arcana/Strength, I would just lockpick the book from your inventory. That’s it for my Book of Dead Gods BG3 guide. For more Baldur’s Gate 3 guides, check out the best early-game spells.
