Everything We Know About Molten Core Updates in Season of Discovery

Molten Core was the very first raid in World of Warcraft, and Phase 4 of Season of Discovery is bringing back this beloved instance with a number of changes to spice things up. From reitemized loot and new tier sets to an entirely new boss fight, there are plenty of updates to discover inside the lair of Ragnaros the Firelord during this season of WoW Classic.

The Molten Core raid will open on July 25th, two weeks after the release of Phase 4. This version of the raid will be designed for groups of 20 players and will have a standard one-week lockout. There will be 11 bosses, which means at least one new boss in addition to the original 10. We don’t know anything about how the encounters have changed from the original, since the raid was not available to test on the Public Test Realm.

One major change to the raid is the addition of new difficulty levels, where players will be able to “turn up the heat” to make the fights tougher. The reward for the added challenge will be an increase in the quantity (though not the quality) of the loot that drops, so you’ll have a higher chance of getting the items you’re after. Blizzard has kept quiet about specifics, but given the numerous new and reitemized fire resistance items that have been datamined, we suspect this increase in difficulty will involve heavy fire damage.

There’s plenty of new and reitemized loot to be found in the raid, including new Tier 1 sets with set bonuses for every class and build. The iconic epic class weapons and legendaries are getting some retuning as well. Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker will not be changing, according to a tweet by Aggrend. That could just be referring to the weapon’s stats and not its proc. Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros is changing, with some new text on its tooltip specifically for Feral Druids. Some of these items are bound to be used in very different ways this time around due to the abundance of newly viable builds in the game.

No doubt there will be plenty of surprises when we enter Molten Core for the first time in Season of Discovery later this month. In the meantime, you can check out all of our up-to-date Molten Core guides below.
