The Tucson regional round of the NCAA 2024 baseball tournament kicked off Friday, with the University of Arizona not able to capitalize on their home-field advantage.

West Virginia vs. Dallas Baptist University

In the opening game, West Virginia secured a decisive 4-1 victory over Dallas Baptist University, propelled by an outstanding complete game from their ace, Derek Clark. His pitching kept Dallas Baptist's potent offense at bay, allowing just one run while striking out numerous batters.

The Mountaineers' timely hitting, highlighted by contributions from JJ Wetherholt and Sam White, proved pivotal in their advance to the winners' bracket.

Grand Canyon University vs. University of Arizona

The second game saw a win for Grand Canyon University as they stunned the University of Arizona 9-4, marking their first-ever NCAA regional victory.

GCU's victory was fueled by a combination of solid pitching and opportunistic hitting, overcoming Arizona's home-field advantage and confidence from an 11-game win streak.

As the Tucson regional progresses, both West Virginia and Grand Canyon University will look to build on their early successes, aiming for spots in the Super Regionals, and coveted slots in Omaha at the College World Series.
