Today, Springer Nature held a Jubilee event featuring Emanuel Wallace – a social media science content creator also known as Big Manny, and Dr. Justin Rose, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Redlands. The event was jointly hosted by Scientific American and Springer Nature’s Black Employee Network (SN BEN).

The event builds upon efforts at the publisher to highlight and encourage diversity within science, technology, engineering and medicine (STEM). Last year, Springer Nature launched its African Research Advisory Council (ARAC). In April this year, the company showcased 50 portraits of scientists from Nature's Where I Work editorial feature – first published in 2019 – in an outdoor exhibition in London titled, “What does a scientist look like?

Rachel Jacobs, Group General Counsel and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council Chair at Springer Nature, said: “An inclusive publishing environment should represent different facets of diversity and all communities. Our employee networks are valuable partners in achieving this aim. We are excited to hold this event and pleased to continue advocating for inclusivity in STEM.”

Big Manny said: “You can only be what you see. When people see others of a similar background in a profession, it makes becoming a professional more attainable for them.”

Dr. Justin Rose said: “It is imperative that we do all we can to diversify the STEM fields. Greater inclusion of underrepresented communities in STEM will not only improve the life outcomes of those individuals, but their unique perspectives will lead to greater innovation, enhanced designs, more scientific breakthroughs, and inspire a new generation of diverse scientists, all of which creates a virtuous cycle within the American and global communities.”
