This is the upgraded version of my previous MarsCraft map! Changes include updated, more accurate surface blocks, a slightly updated base, and less caves. Some of the old images have been left up because the terrain itself is the same, the only difference is the varied blocks.

Why shelter in place when you could shelter in space? This quarantine season, you can explore Valles Marineris, Gale crater, the polar ice caps, and other Mars landmarks using this 1:600 scale map of Mars (approximately 34,500 x 17,200 blocks), created using the publicly available MOLA DTM available from USGS (available here).

MASA (the Minecraft Aeronautics and Space Association) has sent you to the base they have constructed at Jezero Crater, site of the Mars 2020 Lander. At your base, you have been sent with water, dirt, and seeds to construct your own farm on Mars if you so choose, as well as some other basic materials.

Two command block stations have been constructed to alter conditions on Mars at your choosing. The sky on Mars is only blue during sunrise and sunset (and red during the rest of the day), which I did not accurately reflect, but you can enable permanent night if you prefer a darker Martian sky. “Reduced gravity” (jump boost and slow falling) can also be enabled with a command block station near your base.

Typical surface blocks are red sand and stone, but you will find clays and red terracotta where we have detected hydrated minerals on Mars. Caves exist to explore, but none break the surface, so you will have to dig to find them. Also, the world border is void, so be careful of falling.

This world does have some limitations and inaccuracies. The clouds are lower and thicker than those on Mars would be (but you can turn them off in your settings if you'd like or raise them with Optifine). Due to the scale, any region that would be taller than 256 blocks has been cut a bit short, making portions of Tharsis and the Tharsis Montes look like a plateau. T

This map was made and is playable in vanilla minecraft. Map will work in 1.15.2, use any lower versions at your own risk.

This map was all made thanks to publicly available Mars elevation data, so feel free to edit and use the map as you desire, but do not use to make a profit in any way (and please credit me!). If using in a server, please ask for permission!

I hope to eventually turn this into more of an adventure map where you can help all the Mars Landers and Rovers complete their missions, but I can't guarantee a particular release date for something of that nature.
CreditThanks to USGS/NASA for the elevation data and worldpainter for their wonderful world making software.

Update #1 3/28/2020 : by proteinguy 03/28/2020 8:18:23 pmMar 28th, 2020

Surface blocks have been updated to be more than just red sand and ice, there is now stone on sloped surfaces (where dust has a harder time building up) as well as clays and red terracotta placed where we have detected hydrated minerals. The small base with some supplies has been updated to look a little cleaner as well.

I've double checked the file and had some others download it and test it for me and it has seemed to open successfully every time. The file is fairly large however and may take a while to download (around 30 minutes to a bit over an hour), if it is unable to download fully or unzip fully it that may cause problems with the file. If you have tried again and can't get it to work please let me know!

Hello, Proteinguy here. I am planning on upgrading this to version 1.17 when the increased height limit is released so the Tharsis region looks as it should. No official date set for the release but it will likely happen by this fall.
