They were specialized soldiers of the German Army during World War I. In the final years of the war, soldiers were trained to fight with "infiltration tactics", which were part of the new German method of attacking enemy trenches. Men trained in these methods were known in Germany as Sturmmann (literally "storm man"), formed into companies of Sturmtruppen ("storm troops")
