This pack is an attempt to fix some of the most disliked features of vanilla world generation without taking away the vanilla feel: no new structures or weird trees, but a much better arrangement of what vanilla already offers.
    • 38 new biomes help transitioning between vanilla ones (instead of hard borders where everything changes in a matter of a few blocks) and adding variety to biomes that only come in 1-2 versions in vanilla
    • smooth transitions between 7 different climate zones and vegetation types (instead of random "biome bubbles" made of plains turning into forests turning into plains forever until BOOM! desert)
    • mostly flat beaches (instead of sand climbing up hills)
Transitions help find the biomes you're searching for. Need a jungle? Go where vegetation gets thicker and thicker while plants change to more tropical species. Better than running in a random direction!

Compatibility: Sensible Biomes is designed to be compatible with most data packs that change the terrain or structures, but it won't work together with packs that add new biomes. Making it so compatible with vanilla and other packs is a big limitation, but I'm working on a different version of this pack that will change the world much, much more.

    1.20 overhaul : by Wedhro 11/19/2023 12:45:45 amNov 19th, 2023

    • Complete rewrite of the 1.17 version to the new format used by version 1.20 and above.
    • Most old biomes and continents were scrapped in order to make this
      pack compatible with other worldgen packs that modify the terrain;
worlds generate the same as vanilla, only the vegetation changes.
    • Added river biomes.

Some biomes don't seem to generate ruined portals. (experienced this by re-creating a world, and including this datapack, and there was no ruined portal where one was previously)

You can't fully remove it from the world, once you remove it, the world won't function

I'm researching how to make it not affect my world and quietly lie dormant in the list as if it's dead.

Would I be correct that this datapack wouldn't be compatible with popular Vanilla worldgen mods such as Terralith, WWOO, or new biomes like Alex's Caves?

I "only" changed how biomes generate, so it's compatible with data packs that change anything else (cave shapes, terrain, heights, structures) but not with data packs that do the same thing i.e. adding new biomes and/or changing how they generate. And it would be pointless anyway: each of such data packs have their own philosophy about how the world should look, it's almost impossible to make them work together.

EDIT: you can use such packs together to get some changes, just move Sensible Biomes on top and while you won't see additional biomes you'll still get overhauled vanilla structures/trees, terrain and so on. Custom stuff still won't show, though.

Does this completely override vanilla vegetation or is it still transitions between biomes?

Terrain generation is untouched, what changes are climate zones and biome distributions i.e. vegetation or lack thereof. You can use any seed you like for how it generates mountains, islands etc. and you'll see mountains and oceans are still the same, but the biomes will probably be different.

EDIT: I couldn't leave biomes exactly where they are because vanilla distribution is far from ideal and the transitional biomes would be super tiny.

Hello guys, I'm working on an update with a few tweaks and it would be a good time to add some new biome.

Which new biomes would you like to see added?

Feel free to suggest anything but remember this pack is meant to feel vanilla and some things are outright impossible, so keep it reasonable.

(yes, it will still stuck on 1.17 and likely never be updated)
