The chainmail being uncraftable has always been silly, by the time you get chainmail you are probably at the point where you have better armour so it isn't part of the game's progression making it redundant.
So these packs are to give the armour set a place in Minecraft's progression as well as work with a different datapack that changes the progression more significantly, (it is almost ready and will be released soon!) however releasing the chain changes separately had several advantages. If you didn't like the larger datapack but still like the chainmail changes you can pick them separately, this is the same mentality of vanilla tweaks and I really appreciate it.
The second advantage is that this feature can have several options as to how you craft the set. In the bigger pack iron requires a longer process to get ingots of so the initial idea was to make the chainmail from nuggets, with nuggets being enough for rings which makes sense, as a cheap early-mid game option. I've seen lots of recipes that use chains for chainmail, the problem being that chains are an ingot and 2 nuggets, more expensive than iron armour. But chainmail being made from chains fits with Minecraft's representative surreal slightly non abstract logic, hence why it's so popular, and for a decorative block very expensive. So I thought of several logical ways to make chains cheaper and then craft mail with them. Again wanting to give people options I made all the ones I liked.

The nuggets are arranged in a ring for a chain link, 4 nuggets make multiple links for a chain.
