Why is Minecraft so popular?



            The world of video games have become much more advanced and graphically pleasing since the dawn of video games when Pong was all people had to play. Today video game graphics are getting more realistic with ever Madden and NBA 2k that is being released. This poses a big question, what has become so pleasing and acceptable about playing a game where everything is based off 16x16 pixel blocks? Although there are higher detail resource packs, I am relating directly to the Default Minecraft. When talking about video games outside of Minecraft critics talk heavily about how sharp and realistic the graphics are. When critics review Minecraft they look at it with a completely different mindset almost as if they are accepting the set back to earlier style graphics. This has always puzzled me as to how such a basic graphical interface game has because the spark for some much conversation. One thing that makes the game so popular is that it is almost like grand theft auto in the sense that there is no “required” objective. You have all the free will to do whatever you want. This also opens up a creative mindset that encourages users to test their creativity and play for hours upon hours in hopes to creating something unique to them. Minecraft is a game of its own and will always be one of a kind in video game history.

i think the reason why people like minecraft is that you can go and do what ever you want... and minecraft is not good to compare to other games such as: COD, BF, any sports game because it is all of those but still a lot more better! You can have gunfight you can play football (its hard thou) you can Play anygame in minecraft if just someone has enought time to set it up. You can do even more stuff than in Gmod.. and its much more simple / complex (when you can go in gmod build a car you have in minecraft build a house or even a door that you can not build in gmod) And the modding aspect... You can with mods do even more...
i have seen alot of mods.. even a dupstep gun mod (gun from saints row 4)  so i tell you MINECRAFT is:
Survival simulator, building sim, First person shooter, all of the simulators, its a adventure game, its a Horror game, its a creative game, role playing game, dice game, war game, puzzle game, educational game, Its everything!

I understand the people like it but Im asking the question of why people like it, the psychological standings behind the game and how its more entertaining that others.

Like I said, it's because of MC's almost absolute freedom to create pretty much anything and to share it online, to show off. In other games you can build just cities or just something else but in MC it can be anything. The game is basically very simple so it's user friendly. Also it does not give you hundreds of building elements about which you'd have to learn complicated stuff how to use them. It gives you some blocks, some redstone logic and do what you want with it. So simple, so effective.

I think it good that Minecraft not have the best graphic. If a game is to realistic and the graphic is beautiful, it's often have limits that Minecraft doesn't have today. The creators of Minecraft can put in new blocks and materials, without changing anything else to make it smooth.

I also think the power of the game is in the almost absolute freedom. The freedom here is so huge one should call Minecraft a toy, not a game. Notch in fact does so. Minecraft is a toy, a tool that everyone can use to create almost anything from simple houses, cars, planes, all kinds of models of anything you can think about, to spaceships, RS computers, whole islands and cities, custom terrains etc. There's so many ways you can use this toy for. And then there's the online aspect. and the community. Nobody wants to build just for himself. You can share on servers or sites like PMC. All these things together are the reason why MC is so popular.
