Ah yes, Minecraft. The game we all know and love!
But, why do we love this game? It's just a bunch of blocks and square-shaped creatures with graphics that make PAC-MAN look 1080p, but it's a real 'block-buster' (haha, I made a pun three sentences in!) in the game industry.
The answer can be found in one word: block. No, not the button you press when somebody won't accept your friend request on Facebook for the millionth-billionth time. The shape. The cube.
Not to geek out on you, but the cube is perhaps the most shape in the universe. Six faces, twelve edges, eight vertices, and all in all the 3D brother of our favorite 2D pal, the square. It's simple, and the graphics are 16x16 pixels (256 in all), making it even more inceredibly simplistic, but our old buddy and my all-time favorite game developer, Notch, has turned it into the 'building blocks' of his genius game.
The cube builds up the world of minecraft. They tesselate, which is a fancy term for 'match up' or maybe 'stack' in this case, which allows them to line up and make the world.
Now, let's stop for a second here. If you're reading this post, you've most likely spent hours either playing or watching others play Minecraft. What's the point? To build.
These cubes allow you to build an infinite amount of limitless creations and shapes, all from these simple three dimensional squares. You can build a ball of TNT (well, close to a ball, anyways), a huge castle, a fierce wizard, a giant potato, a huge toilet that can *gasp* FLUSH! You've got pistons for moving, redstone for wiring, pickaxes for mining, and these endless amounts of blocks for building. Minecraft is pretty much Engineering & Design: The Game. You have no limits, you can do whatever you want. The game just doesn't end! In an interview with Notch, he said that he just couldn't settle on a final version for a game like this. And sure enough, the updates still come (even though they're taking a little bit longer to come, but they're getting cooler!) and they still expand your massive inventory of blocks. It's an adventure, with your creativity and imagination to guide you! It's a huge block world, where you can build and do ANYTHING YOU WANT!
Minecraft is an endless realm of creativity, imagination, simplicity, and overall genius.
It's your opportunity to do what you've dreamed. Design a new phone, run the world's (or server's) largest train system, build a luxurious airplane, live in a skyscraper, eat diamonds for dinner! This is YOUR realm, and that's why YOU love it.
This is my first blog post, I hope you enjoyed!
