Hello and welcome to another episode of Week in Review!  This week, I'm also unveiling the debut of my Binding of Isaac Let's Play series.  You can check it out here on PMC.  But, getting back to Minecraft, let's talk about the best builds of the week.

The best structure of the week is Necrotyc B762 - A Novicic Spacecraft, created by Barbarian.  Barbarian has been on Week in Review several times in the past year, but has never obtained a medal.  Until now, that is.



Necrotyc seems to be a play on the word ‘Necrotic’, which means ‘decayed’ or ‘dying’.  I have no idea why Barbarian chose that title, considering that this intergalactic battleship couldn’t be more pristine and lively.



In terms of overall form, Necrotyc B762 takes on a simple, lengthy appearance.  The creativity comes in the form of a variety of panels, weapons, docks, and decorations on the exterior.  The whole thing is covered in vents, exposed wires, decals, and other technological goodies.



The cannons are lined up on an angle, which is difficult to execute in Minecraft, along with some wing-like protrusions.  These appendages give the ship a more elegant, ethereal nature, which counteracts the bulkiness of the hull.



The ship also takes advantage of brightly-lit green glass, which gives it an eerie, almost alien appearance.  This, combined with cleverly-placed armor plating, gives the ship a compelling appearance when viewed in the dark.



Though Necrotyc doesn’t have much in terms of interior work, it’s still a stunning showpiece.  It’s good to see that Minecraft is continually being used to make fantastical oddities like this one.

As most of you well know, 10K landscapes usually garner a lot of medals here on Week in Review.  This week is no exception.  The best terraforming of the week is [10K x 10K] RPG World, created by Mageros.



You won’t find fancy renders, or aftereffects here in this map. This is terraforming, minimally modified, and presented as you’ll see it in game.  I respect that ethos and the undeniable challenges it brings.



Hell, Mageros doesn’t even provide an overhead view of the terrain.  It speaks to his intent in forcing the player to experience the map firsthand, rather than just looking at a screenshot.



But, regardless of a minimalist presentation, this map is absolutely beautiful.  There’s an incredible level of diversity here.  The continent is made up of dozens of quirky biomes, most of which are original and fantastical in nature.



Mageros does a great job crafting new and unique areas in an art form that all too often manifests as a simple tundra or a volcanic wasteland.  The biomes here are blended in extraordinary fashion.  Desert cliffsides are merged with grasslands, jungles are fused with mountain ranges, and volcanoes are combined with mesas.  And all throughout, there’s a sprinkling of beautiful, brightly colored trees.



It’s a well composed landscape, with a lot of imagination and a lot of character.  It’s not the type of thing that’s going to blow your mind, but it’s something that will give you a lot to digest, and a lot to explore.  It’s just one of those maps.

People are always finding new and inventive ways to use Minecraft.  A few months ago, Tober888 created a 3D recreation of a painting.  This week, he’s done something similar.  The best organic work of the week is Drowning Girl.



Drowning girl is a 3-dimensional environment that is meant to be viewed like a flat poster.  It’s not an entirely novel concept, but it’s rare to see such a project executed so well.



This is meant to be a reimagining of ‘Drowning Girl’, by Roy Lichtenstein.  It’s a piece of pop art, kind of like the cover of a comic book.  The build itself is a boxed-in area, covered in a grid with text and pixel art.  At the base is a mixture of ice and wool, churning around the vague form of a women caught in the tide.



In terms of organic work, the figure is well executed and the ‘water’ looks highly realistic.  But when you step back and look at it all together, it becomes something else entirely.  The image is very vivid and the elements are perfectly aligned.  The 2D effect is so striking that it actually looks like a piece of pixel art when first viewed.



This isn’t something that you see very often on PMC.  Tober888 has apparently forged a new and exciting genre of building, and has mastered his technique very quickly.  Using Minecraft to create new and interesting takes on artwork is surely something that more people will become involved with in the near future.
