About the Author

Richard Hutt has spent many years building a cover story in broadcasting and media regulation. He has made radio programs about wine, TV programs about cinema and books about being a man. His interest in espionage began with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and a picture of his father in Moscow in 1967. He lives in the UK.

Fiction, reality and the otherworldly co-exist in Herb Lester’s universe. Since 2010, our illustrated maps have documented the distinctive in the world’s great cities as well as charting locations associated with literature, rock’n’roll, the occult and wider pop culture. Increasingly untethered to the real world, our range of notepads from fictional hotels make ideal souvenirs from places no one can visit.

This could have been such an awesome thing but unfortunately, almost no effort and certainly no finesse was put into creating this map. Its legend is difficult to read because the color of the printing is too similar to its background. The map is sparsely labeled and, for a giant map to only use numbers to denote its locations of interest, it’s appallingly lazy. Also, very few of London’s streets are labeled, so, if you’re not a Londoner, you need another map of London to help you with this map.

I really tried to find some positives because I hate the inconvenience of having to return things. Here’s the only thing I could come up with and, while it isn’t enough for me, it might appeal to others:

Somebody who enjoys amateur mapmaking or illustrating could have a lot of fun fleshing this map out themselves with actual information. It might be an enjoyable assignment in an English class, for instance, to turn this map into the useful reference companion it should be. The identifying information about each location is found on the back, so it could be done.

Unfortunately, I was unable to overcome my disappointment, so I will be returning this map.
