Software is extremely limited without giving a Chinese company access to your personal information

Software is extremely limited without giving a Chinese company access to your personal information
--- 7 month update 1/16/24 ---Aqara (subsidiary of the controversial Chinese company Xiaomi) has updated their software and TOS, and I would no longer would recommend this lock! You are now required to agree to a very permissive (for them) Terms of Service that allows them to collect, store, and do nearly whatever they want with your personal information to login to the app. Since the nature of configuring the lock and hub over Bluetooth and TCP/IP is required, you also must give the app permission to connect to your network and scan your devices, which effectively gives them location information. So they know your location, who you are, when you are home, what & when you & other users do with your locks and other Aqara devices, and they have a backdoor into your network via their hub. I find this extremely shade, and personally I do not trust Xiaomii with this access and information, and am upset that they changed their app to require this in order to continue receiving updates and access to most configuration of the lock itself - it feels dishonest to me.There is a "HomeKit Mode" that lets you skip the TOS and mandatory login, but if you use it in this mode, you cannot setup/use fingerprints or NFC, see a log of when users accessed the device, manage any users outside of HomeKit's limited user management, or use the hub to configure. The Bluetooth connectivity is surprisingly slow and unreliable, so the locks become very difficult to manage in "HomeKit Mode".The TOS is full of many red flags, including terms that disallow you from using the locks with third party software, or trying to even develop software that works with the locks. See screenshot for a very small subset of the TOS. If you own this lock READ THE TOS, seriously, it's ridiculous.--- 3 month update 9/14/23 ---We've been using the lock for 3 months on our most used door. By now I'm sure the Schlage would have needed a new set of batteries. The Aqara is still on the first set of batteries, and the app is still showing "High" battery level - so I'm very pleased with that. We've had no issues, the fingerprint scanner has consistently worked well. I just noticed there is a new firmware update - this wasn't even an option with the Schlage. A few times, if the door is not shut or aligned quite right, the lock will keep retrying to close, but the Schlage did the same thing - this really says more about our door than the lock. So far so good!--- Original review ---We have 7 external locks on our home, about 10 years ago I installed Kwikset Z-Wave, then switched to Schlage Encode when the Kwikset vulnerability came out, then got a Schlage Encode Plus to add HomeKit and have used that for a few months, with long-term plans to convert all the locks to HomeKit. I plan on switching my home over to Aqara after using the one I received today for a few hours. Here are my thoughts. The U100 is far more sophisticated than the Schlage Encode Plus and is roughly half the cost. Build quality seems comparable, there are a few things I prefer on the Schlage but a few things I like on the Aqara - so physically it's a toss-up. Software and feature-wise, the Aqara blows the Schlage away. It is that simple. My biggest gripe with the Aqara is that the battery cover is plastic and uses spring tabs to attach, I really hope they do not break over time as many plastic spring tabs do. They should have done a better job with the back cover and battery compartment. Just like Schlage (and Kwikset), it uses 4x AA batteries. Really wish there were a rechargeable Lithium option, as I've never gotten more than a few months out of a smart lock set of AAs if it's used more than occasionally. We'll see how well the Aqara does, I'm not really hopeful. I do not understand why smart locks are using alkalines with such a short lifespan in 2023.The keypad seems responsive, better than the Schlage. The feedback sounds are faster and better, and there is a synthesized voice that is well-executed and helpful. The fingerprint reader is very quick and seems surprisingly accurate, much closer to Touch ID than I expected. I have not tried NFC due to the lack of the fobs being included (the lock description said it ships with 2 NFC fobs but they are not in the box. Looks like the Amazon listing has been updated to remove this.) The keypad does require one press to wake up, then the PIN must be entered, then the lock button hit. With a minimum 6 digit pin, this means 8 presses are needed to unlock. The Schlage was better in this regard, as the "wake up" press also counted as a digit, and the lock opens as soon as the final digit is entered. The lock can be added directly to HomeKit, but only HomeKit, Home Key and PIN codes (once the firmware is updated) will work. Fingerprint enrollment, temporary passcodes and NFC require the Aqara Home app to setup. The Aqara Home app requires registering an email and logging in to do this, so there is some data collection being done. Aqara is a Chinese company, if this makes you nervous, you are not alone. Some remote features require an Aqara hub, I have not bound the lock to a hub due to the requirement that the hub is also linked to Aqara's cloud network with your identity.Overally, it seems like a great lock for the money, I would buy this over the Schlage any day, but here are the drawbacks as I see it:- Unlike Schlage, we have no idea how vulnerable the mechanical lock is to picking or opening by force.- The plastic battery cover is held on by spring tabs and does not seem very durable to me. Will we be able to get replacement parts if/when it fails?- The "Shadow Gray" color has a tint of brown to it. Don't expect a neutral gray, and it may look weird on a black door.- NFC fobs are not included despite being advertised as including them- 4x AA alkalines are unlikely to last long (they say "up to 8 months" so likely much less than that, especially if the lock is used often, and/or in cold temperatures). Why no lithium rechargeable pack??

The front is a nice weighty metal, does not feel cheap. The sliding cover that hides the keyhole is sturdy. You wouldn’t accidentally slide it bc it takes a somewhat firm grip on either side to move it. Once lowered, it stays in place until you side it back up, which results in a satisfyingly quiet metal snapping sound.

The back cover & knob snap off to install screws and metal connecting plate. You’ll have to take the cover and knob off to replace batteries, also. It’s made of a durable hard material, not metal like the front.

The keypad and fingerprint reader are responsive and they make a small sound each time a button is touched. Not loud, I like it. But there’s no way to mute it that I’m aware of. I’ve been using it for 4 days. It has locked and unlocked using my fingerprint everytime without missing. I tried using the PIN and key also and both worked with no problems.

Installation is a breeze if you watch the step by step video in the app. (There are no physical instructions in the box.) Comes with 4 AA batteries and extra screws. Once installed, it’s secure, it does not move.

CON: The app could be better, it’s plain and clunky but functional. I easily set up fingerprints and PIN using it. You can set up several different profiles, one time use, etc.

**I did not connect with Apple/Alexa/Google but you can if you choose to.**

EDIT: 8/7/23 - Included Cheapo Batteries died (temperate zone temps, one or two motorized locks a day [unlocked for most of day]) Going to see how long Energizer Max batteries last

Most of stuff below is still valid, lock seems fine, it occasionally makes chime noises by itself with no one nearby, so not sure what that is
END EDIT

I took a chance on this as this seems to be a lower cost homekey compatible Door lock that I wanted to put on back door. I'm comparing it to the Schlage Encode Plus that I have on my front door, Kwikset Homekit Premis and August 2nd Gen which this is replacing to get to a full native homekit door setup. (The August was working within homekit by using homebridge)

I watched the initial review videos which is what convinced me as well. I also have other Aqara items and the brand seems to solid and I felt comfortable testing.

Initial Impressions are good, the unit is hefty and seems well built, the backplate is a little plasticky compared to schlage and kwikset, but pretty good. You'll need a long shaft philips head driver to attach the back lock to the door plate, that's the only real issue I had with install.

They only include QR codes to manual and install video, which was okay, but don't expect detailed paper instructions.

Install was fine, trickier for me because I had old 3/4" crossbore/Door Latch hole which I had to enlarge. If you have standard 1" crossbore, you should be fine. The screw on the door jamb side could be longer for security reasons, but the back door its mounted on has a window on it.

Aqara pairing was fine, it did have firmware update issue that kept failing, force closing the app and restarting solved the issue. Firmware update happened fine, but took 5ish minutes.

Registering fingerprint was easy, its similar to touch ID where it asks you to touch it 7 times.

Binding to Homekit app was fine from Aqara App, it even imported the passcode I set on the aqara side to the homekit side. Homekey worked fine.

It seems binding to an Aqara hub may improve HomeKit response times.

In all, seems like solid cheaper competitor to the Schlage Encode Plus. The fingerprint feature if reliable is nice bonus compared to the encode plus. Time will tell about battery life. I'm tempted to get another to replace the kwikset homekit premis. I'm comfortable rating this 5/5 for now unless I encounter issues or if it eats batteries (it does come with some cheapo batteries which I appreciated).

I bought three of these and have been living with them for over 3 months. I love them 99% of the time! However, my tech-challenged wife threatened to banish them from the house more than once due to frustrating issues. When it works, it works very well and I love the design and features - easy setup, seamless unlocking with my apple watch. But to avoid repeating marketing fluff and other reviewers, I'll focus on the cons:
- They run on alkaline batteries. In addition to being annoying to replace, That makes the motor too weak to overcome rubbing/misaligned striker plates or just plain inoperable below about 20°F (0°F if it's on a heated house door). My old house is constantly shifting in the Midwestern weather and my striker plates will never stay aligned.
- Connectivity with the app is slow at best. Thankfully, I rarely have reason to check the lock status in the app but when I do I'm not fully convinced it's accurate (showing high battery level even though the lock is not working in the cold temps)
- Some doors are not compatible and Aquara could easily offer an adapter kit, but I don't think they do. I had to get creative with some door modification to get it to install on 1 of 3 doors.

BATTERY WORKAROUND: I was able to supercharge one of these locks that was on my unheated garage door by using an AC battery adapter for AA batteries. These are inexpensive devices that power the lock with a wall plug. No more replacing batteries and weak lock function! Every lock operation goes super fast and secures confidently. However, I have to have an unsightly cord running along my door or heavily modify my door to hide the wire. Not an issue for a garage but unacceptable for a house.

I'll be first in line when Aquara offers a more powerful battery version (Lithium Ion?), and in the meantime I'll enjoy it when it works and try to fend off my wife's frustrations when it doesn't. Wish me luck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy, Cheap Solution to Non-Removable Faceplate on Deadbolt (No Door Modification Required!)
Reviewed in Canada on August 16, 2023
The media could not be loaded.
 THE PROBLEM—

If your existing lock uses a drive-in style deadbolt (round, no faceplate), the deadbolt included with the Aqara U100 Smart Lock is incompatible as it has a non-removable faceplate. The tailpiece slot on the Aqara Deadbolt (the part that accepts the rod and turns to extend and retract the deadbolt) is uncommon, at least according to the locksmiths I've spoken with.

Some doors cannot be modified to include a faceplate, such as metal doors, or, like me, you might want to avoid modifying your door to have a faceplate.

SOLUTION—

Buy the Design House 783332 Pro Deadbolt from Amazon ($14 CAD as of writing) as it has a removable faceplate and can be used as a drive-in style deadbolt that has a slot compatible with the U100's tailpiece (the rod that goes through the deadbolt and turns to extend and retract the deadbolt).

If you receive a calibration error with this deadbolt, try calibrating the lock with the door open (the app will tell you to have it closed). If it works, you'll need to chisel out the hole for the deadbolt in the doorjamb/doorframe to allow the deadbolt to fully extend to prevent constant beeping (and error messages in the app). I think this was an issue with my particular door, as the hole for my deadbolt seemed overly shallow.

If the Design House 783332 Pro Deadbolt is unavailable, or if you want to try to find one with a shorter deadbolt, other deadbolts from Design House or Emtek that use a + shaped slot for the tailpiece should work.

BACKSTORY / FULL EXPLANATION—

I was excited to try the U100 as a replacement for my two August Smart Locks— they eat CR123A batteries for breakfast and would routinely disconnect from my Apple HomeKit setup.

My first attempt at installing the U100 came to a complete halt— the deadbolt latch included with the smart lock has a non-removable faceplate that requires modifying your door if it was configured for a drive-in (round, no faceplate) style deadbolt.

I wasn't comfortable modifying my doors to accommodate a faceplate, and I wasn't going to pay a professional to do it. After all, I justified this new smart lock purchase based on estimated battery savings, and I wasn't about to extend my timeline to riches.

After visiting a Home Depot and two locksmith shops, extensive Googling, a support email to Aqara, and a plea to Reddit, I couldn't find a solution that didn't include modifying my door to fit a faceplate. According to the locksmiths I spoke with to find a compatible drive-in deadbolt, the part where the tailpiece slides through the deadbolt to turn the lock was one of a kind. So my first U100 went back to Amazon.

This kept me up at night—every fiber of my being wanted to stop buying CR123A batteries. Then I remembered the August Lock came with a deadbolt tailpiece compatibility graphic— my first good lead.

According to the August Lock deadbolt tailpiece compatibility graphic, Defiant, Emtek, Weiser, and Weslock, all use a similar tailpiece (size and orientation) to the Aqara U100's deadbolt.

After some Googling, the Emtek tailpiece slot appeared to be positioned in the right spot on the lock and utilizes a + shape which should allow it to be compatible with the U100 tailpiece. The tailpiece slots from the other brands could theoretically work, but I didn't want to risk the mechanism having reversed lock/unlock positions.

Looking on Amazon for Emtek replacement deadbolts, I found a brand called Design House which seemed to utilize the same tailpiece slot and placement as Emtek. All of their locks come with a faceplate, but my prior research suggested that the faceplate on most locks is removable. I landed on the Design House 783332 Pro Deadbolt, which was $14 Canadian and shipped with Prime.

Once I received the new deadbolt, I easily slid off the faceplate (no tools required) and ordered a new Aqara Smart Lock U100. When it arrived, I installed it following the instructions but used the Design House deadbolt instead of the Aqara. As the tailpiece slot on the Design House is + shaped, be sure to match the orientation of the tailpiece with the knob on the interior side of the U100 so that you don't have to disassemble and reassemble the lock to change which way the tailpiece fits into the tailpiece slot on the deadbolt.

After installing, when setting up the smart lock in the app, I received a calibration error that I couldn't move past. After a quick panic that there was some special magic in the Aqara Deadbolt, I wised up and tried calibrating the lock with the door open (rather than closed) to triangulate the issue. Sure enough, it calibrated, but it still wouldn't work with the door closed (the smart lock would beep, and the app would throw errors and require recalibration).

As it turns out, the hole for the deadbolt in my doorjamb/door frame was shallow and didn't allow it to extend fully. I did have to chisel out the hole, but this was an issue with my original door installation and not resulting from the Design House deadbolt being freakishly long.

I'm still playing around with the smart lock (I just installed it), but in early testing, it's been very responsive in HomeKit to lock and unlock the door at home and when I'm away. HomeKey and the Fingerprint Reader are lightning fast, and the integrated numbered is much more delightful to use than the (sold separately) August Lock keypad. I'm excited that there is an easy-to-activate "Passage Mode" that can be activated on the lock itself, allowing you to temporarily turn off auto-lock (which, after living with a smart lock that doesn't do this, was a key-selling feature).

I'll update this review if I encounter any issues.

I hope this helps!

Matt

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy, Cheap Solution to Non-Removable Faceplate on Deadbolt (No Door Modification Required!)
Reviewed in Canada on August 16, 2023
