Aqara Smart Hub M2: Versatile Smart Home Bridge with Some Drawbacks
The Aqara Smart Hub M2 offers a comprehensive solution for integrating various smart devices into your home ecosystem. With support for alarm systems, IR remote control, and home automation, it seamlessly connects with popular voice assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and IFTTT. Overall, I found its performance to be commendable, enhancing the convenience and efficiency of managing smart devices. However, there were a couple of disappointments. Firstly, the reliance on a micro USB input feels outdated, especially in a market where USB-C is becoming the standard. Secondly, the absence of a white color option limits its aesthetic compatibility with different home setups. Despite these drawbacks, the Aqara Smart Hub M2 remains a solid choice for those looking to streamline their smart home experience.

This hub makes a solid connection to my 2.4 gHz WiFi network and provides good coverage.

Most (and so far for me, all) Aqara smart items bridged through it can be addressed in HomeAssistant through the HomeKit integration. No need to bother with Matter - unless you want to. The IR blaster, however, only functions with the phone app and does not expose paired items with HomeAssistant - and that it's only minus in my opinion. However, as I view the IR blaster as a nice bonus, and not core to the product I didn't dock the item a star in my rating. However, if the IR blaster were to be exposed - now, that would be something special!

Devices are easy to set up and this hub performs a good as advertised. It's price point makes it a good choice for any home wanting to add good Zigbee coverage for the Aqara ecosystem. Nice.

Also, note that I run this hub alongside another Zigbee coordinator (a USB stick) and both networks function without issue even though my 2.4 gHz spectrum is pretty saturated with competing networks. Again, nice!

I bought this product for one reason, the 360 degree IR blaster and HomeKit connectivity so that I can add Siri commands and use my HomePod to control my LG tv. This is all I tested so I cannot review it’s connectivity to other devices, but for this… IT’S PERFECT!

Admittedly, the setup is a bit weird (did not know it would speak to me lol 😂 ) and very clunky, so don’t get frustrated, but if you spend the time, it is worth it. Here is what I did:

———————————————

I’ll assume you have the device connected to your network and setup, and are in the Aqara App.

Add your device. First you want to add your device(s). I.e. my LG Tv

Don’t worry about Automation. For this you won’t go here, I assume you can setup other devices you connect automations here. For this, You want “Scenes”

So this is where the setup is weird and clunky. You need to manually add each action you want (Tv volume up etc.). Yea, this is tedious but necessary.

Basically what we are doing is creating a HomeKit scene for each action that will sink to your Home App. This sounds weird but works surprisingly well.

Click Add Scene. You will see your TV, then remote, then alllll your remote options. Pick the first one you want.

When naming each action, give it a device name then the action. I named my TV “El G”, so my scenes were named “El G Volume Up” “El G On” etc. Yes you have to do every action you want.
**do not name it just “Volume Up” as Siri will just turn the HomePod up, thus the TV Name first.

Once you have all the TV controls you want set up as scenes, click Edit at the bottom and you will see the option to sync with the MyHome app.

Done! You will see all the crazy amount of scenes you just created synced in your MyHome App.
Now when you say “Siri El G Volume Up”
Boom, tv turns up!!
TIPs
*you can add delays and additional actions in each scene. I added a second volume up so the scene would turn my tv up 2 notches instead of just 1.
**my tv controls my soundbar so I did not need to add that as a device. You may need to if you control your speakers separately
***you will see a Siri circle on the right in the Aqara app, if you select that you can record your own Siri command!

Cheers.

Initially the hub worked fine for sometime. I bought it because my research informed me its an excellent hub to have in your smart home set up. Three weeks ago I noticed the hub keep going offline line and I had to constantly plug it out the back in. I then decided to unpair the hub and then pair it back but it's not allowing me to do so. I tried holding down the reset button and it did not work. I went on to press he reset button 10 times and it's still not going into pairing mode. Now I have child devices and no hub to connect it to.

Doesn't even work with their own flagship lock, the u100. The hub is incapable of pairing with either of my u100 locks, so it's essentially useless. Don't waste your money on Aqara, they have non existent support and non-working hub products.
Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2024
I was annoyed that I had to buy another Zigbee hub to get a piece of tech to work better, but the hub does work as expected. My presence sensor works much more quickly now, and it is integrated with Home Assistant on my local network. I haven't tested the IR transmitter on the hub yet, but I am expecting adequate performance. I think it is important to have local control of your devices so that you can still control your home when the internet goes out. It's possible that I could have tied the presence sensor to a generic Zigbee dongle I already had, but the hub was much quicker and easier to deal with. I am looking forward to industry getting the Matter standard working so that we don't keep having to deal with annoyances like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Key part of Aqara's System
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 7, 2024
There's not much to say about home automation hubs really - you kinda need it whether you wished you did or not really, if you want that brand's equipment to be usable.

I'm using some buttons, the presence detector and the door bell and it all just syncs up and works superbly.

Let's talk about it as a whole system - the app is superb, everything basically just worked out of the box as described pretty much and integration with IFTTT is very good across the entire range of products.

I've not got them working in Home Assistant yet (i'm just getting that installed), but will be doing that at some point and see how I get on, looks like it might work but we'll see - untested at this point.

Definitely recommend Aqara based on what i've used so far - packaging is super, products work well and the app is slick.
