I've only been using this unit for a couple of days, so if I find anything wonky about it later I'll update this review.
I used to have the Koldfront PAC1401W Ultracool 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner which I bought back in 2013. I didn't like it because I needed something to cool my studio apartment and that unit was far too large/powerful, and it was also very noisy. Because it was so large and powerful, it would turn on for one cool cycle and over-cool the room so I was freezing, then it would shut off for one cycle and it would get uncomfortably hot. So it was a constant cycle of being too cold or too hot. That was entirely my fault for choosing a unit that was too large for the space.
This unit is ideal for a single room or a studio apartment. You would not want to use this to cool an entire house, a large garage or any other space larger than a bedroom. It puts out about the same amount of noise as a box fan, yet it is very powerful for its size. I can feel the air blowing when I am standing in the bathroom all the way off the opposite side of the room.
The unit was easy to install. All I had to do was stack up the vent slats and put in the little plastic knobbies to hold them at the height of my sliding window, then shut the window and fix it in place with the security lock at the back. After that I plugged the exhaust hose into the unit and the hole in the window slat, plugged the unit in and off it went. It cooled down my room to a comfortable temperature in about 15 minutes and then shut off. By default the unit turns the fan on and off with the cooling cycle, but you can configure it to always run the fan on either low or high.
One thing I appreciate about this unit, and a primary reason I chose it over other units of the same BTU rating: If you unplug it, it retains your settings and uses them when the unit is plugged back in. This means I can control it with any of the available cheap smart plugs also on Amazon. I have the Emporia smart plugs which not only allow me to control the unit with my Google Home device and my phone, but they also monitor how much electricity the unit uses.
I can use Google Home to do things like:
* "Hey Google, turn off the AC at 2am."
* (When I'm getting ready to leave the office) "Hey google, turn on the AC" (so it's cool in my room when I get home).
* If I forget to turn off the AC before I leave home I can turn it off remotely so it's not running the whole time I'm gone and running up the electric bill.
* I can set a schedule so the unit turns off when I leave for work and switches on half an hour before I get home.
* I can set an outside temperature target so that if the temperature outside gets to a certain level it switches on the AC so the heat inside my room doesn't cause my food and medication to spoil.
The unit is pretty good at maintaining the temperature in the room without being annoying. The cool cycles seem to be at the sweet spot between being off too long and switching on and off too frequently. I did notice that sometimes when the unit switches on for a cooling cycle it goes GA-THUMP and shakes the whole room, for some reason. It's not loud, it's just... like somebody stomping the floor really hard. For that reason I would not recommend placing this unit above the floor like on a desk or table: It DEFINATELY will shake itself off and fall onto the floor.
The unit is about the size of a half fridge and slightly narrower. You can get an idea of the size from my picture which has a plastic spoon in front of it for scale.

Praise: The unit itself is phenomenally well made, incredibly well thought out. Every detail has been planned for and the instructions are clear. The build quality is very good, form factor is excellent too. The Midea app is great and integration with the new device was seamless. The install video is great too.
The ac works wonderfully well. Heat mode works phenomenally well and is super quiet. Heat mode does not require reconfiguration or any particular preparation other than hooking up the drain line. I used the included drain adaptor to run a 1/4” black silicon line to a glass gallon jug for heat condensate drainage. The Midea Duo 14,000 BTU unit (with heat) has an internal pump that pumps out condensate from heat mode. This is very helpful.
Issues; Within a minute of turning on my first unit, it made a HORRIBLE persistent rattling sound. The compressor/cooling lines were rattling against each other. I was able to get in where these lines were and slide the vibration-dampening sleeve that was already on one pipe, further down the pipe, so it would actually keep the pipes from rattling against one another.
My second unit (after sitting for 16-24 hours as it should) made a high pitched metal-on-metal squeaking sound emanating from the compressor when I turned on the ac. I immediately turned the unit off, pondered for a bit, then ran the unit in heat mode, this immediately resolved the metal-on-metal squeaking issue. It now runs perfectly in heat or cooling mode.
P.S. These units do make a high pitched whine sometimes, but most people will learn to tune it out.
Do not attempt to repair these without some knowledge and caution of these sorts of things.
P.P.S. This unit replaced a Whynter ARC-14S that was much bigger, louder, had no heat, and finally, it did not work well. So Whynter went back!
Edit Jan 2023:
This unit is 8 months old and now periodically emits a loud buzz and does not work. I believe the compressor is freezing up. The issue occurs a few times a day, sometimes once a week. Midea Customer Service asks silly questions and marked my ticket as "Solved" when I failed to reply within 5 days (including weekends). Not impressed. I am now seeking a replacement or refund if possible.
Edit Jan (late) 2023: Midea customer service refunded me for the malfunctioning unit. I am a little concerned that it was not worth repairing a $700 unit, and now I must pay a $60 disposal fee for freon containing devices in CA, but overall I appreciate Midea’s customer service.

I have a 1200 sq.ft. living space and when the temperature was 34C outside, this unit kept the inside at a comfortable 23C.
Quiet, very easy to operate. Set it and forget it.
Only drawback is that you can't reposition it, the hose is not flexible side to side.

Unboxing:
-The unboxing was extremely easy. You just remove the ties and then lift the box off the unit
-You only have to lift the unit for a second to slide the cardboard out from under it, which is good because it is extremely heavy
-The accessories were not secured very well and were rattling around inside the box
Setup:
-The hose being so wide and thick makes it hard to maneuver. There is not much give when it comes to turning the unit
-I think we technically installed it wrong lol we did not use the vertical window adapter. But its in the window just fine and now the unit can face the way we need it to.
-Connecting the unit to the window was extremely easy. The pieces click together, as opposed to the usual hoses that screw together and never actually stay together
-We found the settings on the unit EXTREMELY confusing. They do not easily identify what they are. Low is a Y? Medium is a plus? High is a star?
-The instruction manual makes no sense because they use the same manual for all their units
-We did not use the remote or the app. We just hit power on the unit when we want to use it and it remembers our settings
First Thoughts:
-The hose is amazing. When the AC is running the hose does not get warm to the touch. No warm air is seeping back into the room
-The unit is QUIET! Super quiet. Especially when on the low setting you can barely hear it running. I would have no problem sleeping with it on at night
-The glossy black gets full of fingerprints and pawprints
-The cool air mostly shoots upwards and its at its coldest when the vent is all the way open. You don't feel much air if you are sitting directly in front of the unit. I think it cools the room faster, but just beware if you like to feel it down at ground level
