Editorial Reviews

After the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968, racial tensions across the country rose. Palo Alto, a largely white college town in Cali, wasn't immune. Danny Scher, a junior at the high school, had a dream to have Thelonious Monk perform and help bring about racial unity the community while raising funds for the International Committee. After many twists and turns, the triumphantly successful concert eventually happened. Now available on Vinyl - includes 2 booklets and a poster.

Fantastic album by Monk! Best High School Performance ever!

Fantastic album by Monk! Best High School Performance ever!
An amazing performance and amazing story of Thelonious Monk Quartet playing at Palo Alto High School in 1968! Recorded by an unknown janitor/custodian who recorded this album for tuning the piano. Sadly, we don't know his name but the recording and the performance is exceptional. If you're a Monk or a jazz fan, you must have this piece of jazz history. I was very impressed by it. The recording, the vinyl, the sound, the packaging, the liner notes, poster, and replica of the program that came with it is very cool.

Love the history of this release, sounds great for such an old live recording. Some nice extras included, great value for the $$

There are no surprises here. Monk and his superlative band fascinate the audience in their own right. Monk exhibits his artistry at his most essential, bold, iconoclastic and warm inviting manner. The record documentes unlikely gigs in Monk’s career, while shining a bright light on his perennially underrated mid-60’s quartet.

The back story of “Palo Alto” makes this album irresistible. “Palo Alto” records the live performance of an unscheduled, off-tour concert that Thelonious Monk and his band played at the Palo Alto high school auditorium in the fall of 1968. It was the year uncountable number of world-shaking events happened. To begin with the brutal assassination of Martin Luther King, and Robert F. Kennedy, racial unrest engulfed all over the US. Un settling revelation of the Vietnam war was intensifying further. 1968 was the year of rage and frustration. The Jazz world was swallowed up by the new wave. Miles Davis was reaching his turning point to organize an electric band. Monk was beginning to be sided away as older generations. He was faced with financial difficulties. Furthermore, Monk and his wife Nellie were suffered from severe health problems. An 16-year-old Jewish jazz fan, Danny Scher, decided to hold a concert in the school auditorium to raise funds for his chaired campus International Club. He dreamed to unite the racially divided California communities of Palo Alto and East Palo Alto through music. East Palo Alto was a black community, while Liberal white homeowners were residing in Palo Alto. Black residents in East Palo Alto was skeptical about Monk’s coming to Palo Alto. Ticket sales remained dismal up until the day of concert. When a white ban carrying the Monk’s band emerged at the school parking lot in the rain, doubts evaporated. The rain-soaked crowd promptly lined up to buy their tickets. The quartet were greeted with thunderous applause. One of the school’s janitors asked Scher for his permission to record the show, in exchange for offering his effort to tune the piano. Afterward he gave a tape to the young promotor. The tape was forgotten more than 50 years. Danny Scher writes there was a truce between Palo Alto and East Palo Alto on Oct. 27th, 1968, and that is what music does. The record registers a great power of music in our mind.

Amazing Recording quality. it’s hard to believe it was actually recorded by an amateur in a High school theatre . Sounds so crisp and clean. Every nuance is exposed. It’s amazing that it’s mixed so evenly. Can you hear the symbols and the snare drum perfectly. I love the sound of the upright bass. I listened to this album several times in a row! It’s just so amazing that this recording survived all these years!

The amazing thing about Monk is that he mostly plays his own compositions, over and over. But every time he plays them they sound like new compositions; and therefore always fresh. I just can’t get enough of him.

Beautiful silent press.
I’m not sure if this is analog or digital sourced record, but it’s really well pressed, and overall, amazing live jazz record.

Personally, I think the bass is a little muddy in the mix, it’s understandable due to the time it was recorded in

Highly recommend

Not warped. Clean vinyl with Impulse label. Poster inside. Very pleasantly surprised with this purchase. Apparently I got the last one too because that deal is gone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historic amateur recording but a moment in time to savour

For a while it looked like this recording was not going to see the light of day but it was great that the parties involved sorted out the legal dispute.

First thing to note this is an amateur recording so do not expect hi-fi quality - there's some distortion on a few of the tracks. There's only so much cleaning up can be done without losing the original raw quality.

The packaging is superb and the replica programme and poster are really well reproduced. The booklet has great liner notes that not only cover the concert itself but gives the historical concert. Sadly it seems as if the same problems around skin colour still blight our society.

My only disappointment given the price of the record is the lighweight pressing - my copy is badly warped and will likely send it back for replacement. At the price I expected a premium wight pressing like the Blue Note Tone Poets releases and I'm pretty certain it was advertised as 180G on some sites.

But if you are a Monk fan then this is one to enjoy.
