Great design, poor manufacturing.
3 out of 5 stars
Great design, poor manufacturing.
I really like this knife but the quality is lacking. It's got a great design, shape, weight, and feel in the hand. However, the blade I received is near jagged back at the handle from a poor sharpening job at the factory. This is pretty unacceptable and the reason it's only getting 3 stars. Otherwise I'd give it 5 stars. I'm going to take this as an opportunity to learn how to sharpen my knives so I purchased a Spyderco knife sharpener to fix this thing.

I wouldn't say I'm an expert but I have owned over the years more than two dozen pocket knives. This is either the best, or ties for first but it wins the prize for EDC because it's not a collector's knife that I can use without worrying about its price dropping because it's a collectible. It is certainly my favorite. It is light with a reversible, deep carry clip that can actually go over your pants pocket. The clip is deep enough that it does not catch on the pocket edge and it's not so tight that it takes two hands to wrestle it into place. It is not spring loaded but it is so light if you open it with the right amount of pressure on the lever it almost seems like a spring loaded blade. It looks handsome and useful without exclaiming "He's got a knife!!", both when in use and when in the pocket. I use mine almost every day for something but I'll admit I'm not extremely rough on my EDC knife. I did notice that mine had a few hard edges when I got it...on the spine and on the edges of the carbon fiber but I took some steel wool and smoothed the edges down with a little effort. Unlike other knives I've bought it did not need lubrication, adjustments or sanding off rough pitted metal to give it smooth action. It just came that way...what a treat.
I can't speak for the hardness of the steel, other than it seems to keeps an edge well. I demand a sharp blade so anytime I use it for a project like cutting up a bunch shipping boxes I'll run it over the blade sharpener a couple times to keep it sharp. I usually do it once a week but I've never thought that my blade seemed dull at all even after using it. This is a really good EDC and at 1.9 ounces it does not get in the way. My wife does not like any other knife I have but she said this one looks nice. I agree...it's what I would consider a Gentleman's EDC. I also like how affordable it is. I feel like I can use it, try to wear it out and maybe even lose it and I'm not going to me set back a lot. This is what I want in a knife...a working tool that is there when I want it but not in my way and looks good while serving its purpose.

I want to comment on some things I read in a review after buying mine. In this review they said that the carbon fiber body flexed. No. I can't make mine flex any more than I think steel would with the same force. They said the clip has some wiggle: Nope, not on mine. They said the blade moved: Nope, not on mine. I got the impression they thought it felt cheap because it was light. Um, NO!. There is a difference between cheap and being lightweight. I think the carbon fiber is great. It's lightweight but has a classy basketweave pattern that appears to move and reflect the light differently when you move it side to side, almost like a hologram. The review ends with a comparison to another knife that is like the Atmos but "nicer in every imaginable way" and suggests that you consider a different knife with similar shape and design but then mentions it has a framelock, which is a con to me, it's stainless steel so it's four times heavier and oh, by the way, it costs $250. Ridiculous to compare the two knives, other than they are designed by the same man. Get real. Please don't heed a review like that as he is comparing apples to watermelons.

2023: It’s now two years later and I still carry this knife every day. I love it. It shows no signs of wear and has never disappointed in any way.
I guess I do wish they made the exact little brother to this that was a little shorter. I don’t always need a 3” blade. I think a version on this exact knife with a 2” blade would be perfect. But I honestly still do carry this knife every day.

This knife is an unusual combination of features that were important to me: lightweight, unobtrusive, 3” blade, decent blade metal, grippable, deep carry clip, easy one-handed opening, and inexpensive. I looked at lots of knives before finding the Atmos. It’s everything I wanted plus a great hollow ground, clip point blade. When I clip it in my front pocket, I can’t really tell it’s there. I can reach in and get my keys without it hampering me. But, I know it is there when I need it because the clip is strong. It is extremely sharp when you get it. This is meant to be a light duty knife for everyday carry in the burbs so get something else for your carving, camping, and hunting.

Of the 6 knives I purchased before the Atmos, I came to realize that low weight and a pointy blade fit my uses well. This is my first Kershaw knife, but my second assisted opener. I was hoping that Kershaw would make the assisted opener easy to use. Right out of the box, the tab has some sort rough cut edges on it, and it requires a good amount of force to open, meaning I have to dig my finger into the flipper tab to the point that it is uncomfortable to get the blade to deploy. My hope is that it becomes easier as it breaks in. Other than the speed safe opening system being not so easy, at least at first, there are a lot of things to like about this. This thing weighs very little. The deep carry clip is positioned for it to be deep carry, not a deep carry clip positioned so several mm or 1/4 inch or more sticks out of your pocket. The clip is strong, but not so strong as to tear into pants pockets. The blade is very sharp out of the box, and it is centered when folded close. Steel snobs may turn their nose at the 8cr13MoV steel, but it's fine enough for many jobs and sharpens easy enough. The only other negative I find is that the handle is long enough for a 4 finger grip by men with small to medium-sized hands, but it is a 3 finger grip for larger hands. I have a CRKT M16-01S and comparing the Atmos to it, I find the Atmos looks less "tactical" or "scary" to non-knife people, and it's deep-carry clip means it isn't as easily noticed. The M16-01S is often found for the same or less price than the Atmos, and I'd rate the CRKT M16-01S higher than the Kershaw Atmos in general, though the Atmos should be a better carry for office environment situations over the M16-01S.

Pros:
1. Very lightweight
2. Deep carry clip

Cons:
1. Requires a lot of pressure to open the knife
2. Flipper tab jimping/ grooves are rough, almost sharp
3. Handle length may be short for some folks

Outstanding overall budget knife. I always use caution when buying knives on Amazon due to the propensity of counterfeits being sold buy nefarious sellers. As far as I could ask about or research, there is yet to be a copy of this particular blade as of 04DEC2018.
My example has a fall shut action, perfect centering, good fit and finish, no blade play or lock rock, nice deep pocket carry clip with unobtrusive screws, very light weight, comfortable ergonomics, and of course it cuts.
The cons are minimal and maybe should not be counted at this price point. The gimping on the blade is a little aggressive for a light edc knife but only slightly. The blade steel is lacking for us steel snobs. The biggest con is the country of manufacturing which is China.
Kershaw is showing us what can be had at this less then $34.00 price. It is fantastic for the consumer but potentially disruptive for them because we now know what is possible.
This is a great knife and should be highly recommended even for a knife nerd like myself if I feel like slumming it or I need a knife that is easily replaceable if lost. This is not a hard use or tacticool knife, however it will perform edc jobs such as ;mail, opening packages, cutting tape, food , and even processing cardboard albeit it will need sharpening after serious use. The blade has a hollow grind and will continue to cut things like cardboard well after the shaving edge is gone. Enjoy.
