Product Description

It is very important for a cat to have a durable scratching post. Cats need a scratching post to help them tone their muscles, to remove old nail sheaths from their claws and to help relieve stress. The Bootsie's Scratcher is made from woven sisal which is much more durable than wound sisal. This means that you will get much more use out of your scratching post.

Good quality, but hanging instructions/materials lacking
We have three cats and have owned a SmartyCat free standing scratcher for the last 5 years. It stood the test of time, but it’s heavy and takes up a lot of floor space. We decided to try the wall-mounted version. We tried to hang the scratcher today and were disappointed to find that the anchor and screw provided are *not* deep enough to secure it to the wall. The rubber bumpers provided (see photo) are 1/2” deep, but the screw is just 1” deep. To mount the scratcher, the screw has to stick out of the anchor by half an inch, which is not secure. In fact, it’s so wobbly that the screw starts to rip its own anchor out of the wall (even before the cats touched it). We started over, removed the bumpers provided and replaced them with 1/4” adhesive felt bumpers, which work perfectly. As far as quality goes, I have no worries as we’ve used the brand before. There’s a tiny bit of sisal loose midway down, but it’s not noticeable. I’ll update the review of our experience with the hanging scratcher is different than the free standing scratcher. As far as usage goes, one of my cats tried to use the scratcher before we’d even hung it. The other two found it today, after we hung it and applied a little fresh catnip ;)

The reason I gave it a five stars is because I had no problem with the seller. The item arrived on time. It seems to be good quality, but unfortunately, my cat doesn’t want anything to do with it! I have tried putting treats on it, spraying it with catnip, playing with her on it, and nothing seems to work. All she wants to do is scratch the carpet on my stairs! So frustrating!

I love these almost as much as my kitties do. I have several of the tall free standing posts by the same manufacturer and am very happy with them, so decided to try this version. I have several in different rooms. They are used by the cats whether horizontal or vertical. This rope fabric is very durable, but It will last longer if you keep your fluffy's nails trimmed. (Fun!) If you can't do that, expect it to fray sooner. I have one 11 lb former Tom street cat who will not tolerate being picked up, can barely be touched, so his nails can't be trimmed and have been registered as lethal weapons! His scratcher is still going strong after almost a year of heavy use. A bit of fraying, but he uses it many times every day, and I expect it to last for a few more years at least.
If you hang it, once the top section gets frayed, just flip it. After both ends are frayed you might be able to use it on the floor so they can shred the middle too! I have one on a very smooth floor and the little anti slip pads offer good resistance to sliding.
If your Fluffy resists the scratcher, try using one of those little "laser light" toys. Get the cat to chase the light, then run it up/across the scratcher. Or try rubbing a bit of catnip into the rope fabric to get his/her interest. My aforementioned rescued street cat resisted. So I attached the scratcher vertically since I could not interest him with any type horizontal scratcher. Then I placed one of those little squeaky mice with a computer chip inside on top of the scratcher, on the wood ledge. I tapped the mouse a few times to make it squeak, and he jumped for it. In the process of reaching for the mouse, he dug his claws into the scratcher. Now whenever he hears the squeak, he goes to the scratcher and stretches tall and scratches. Ignores the mouse! Just cracks me up.
Far too many scratching posts on the market are simply too short to be attractive to your cat. This scratcher solves that problem since you can hang it on a wall at any height you deem appropriate. Just be sure to hang it high enough so your cat can get a real good full out stretch while scratching.
I remember a lady years ago who wanted to declaw her cat because he was scratching the back of her recliner. She said she already tried a scratching post and the cat wouldn't use it. I asked her how tall the post was; she said about 18 inches. Then I asked her how tall the back of the recliner was. For a few seconds, dead silence, then she said softly, Ohhhhhh! She bought a TALL post, and bingo! problem solved. One less cat having expensive, unnecessary surgery. One chair saved!

This is an excellent quality scratcher. I bought two of these as I am in the process of adapting a 3-year old male, feral cat from 100% outside to 100% inside. Besides wanting him to feel safe in my home and have entertainment, my primary concern was protecting my carpet and furniture, so I purchased a quality cat tree and two of these scratchers. I compared many scratcher products. This one had some of the best reviews. It is heavy enough that when I lay it on the floor or set it at an incline that it doesn't move when the cat climbs it, sits on it or scratches it. I've just set them on my first floor near the areas he primarily scratches and he has gradually moved to using these and his cat tree over time. Eventually, I may move them to other areas and may mount them upright, but having hardwood floors and since Fluffy has been scratching my door mat for 3 years, starting with them flat on the floor and slightly inclined is a good start. If your cat is ignoring these, try using "Da Bird" or other favorite toy around or on the scratcher and place treats on them so that cat will leave scent on it and get a feel for the surface. That's how Fluffy started using them. Fluffy doesn't react/respond to catnip, so I was prepared to buy a pheromone spray called "Feliway" to entice him to use these scratchers and to get him to use other items and areas of my home. That purchase is on hold for now. I can't recall if SmartCat makes a longer scratcher, Fluffy has a long body. If I need more scratchers, I will check this brand to see if there are any with another 6-12 inches of length as he really loves to stretch it out when he scratches and when they are lying flat on the floor, he sits on one end and then scratches.

This seems like a high quality scratcher and looks much nicer on the wall than most scratchers. It is very easy to hang up, once you have figured out how to interpret the very sparse dierections. FYI, if, like me, you don't hang many things, be careful to not twist the screw into the plastic anchor too far. It is a locking anchor, which means you can continue screwing the screw in but cannot screw it out at all. I did not realize this and ruined the hardware that came with the scratcher. So place the anchor in the wall, screw in the screw a little ways, and test the scratcher's placement. Repeat until placement is correct. I was concerned that the minimal hanging equipment would not be enough but we have large cats who use the scratcher and after a month it is still hanging securely with no damage to the wall.

Finally, if your cats do not use this scratcher that you put so much hard work into hanging up right away, do not worry. Give cats that are used to cardboard and carpet scratchers some time to adjust to the new material. Just keep patiently showing them what the new scratcher is for and they will eventually start using it happily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy and doesn't make a mess everywhere
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 4, 2022
My cat has been quite fussy about what she would scratch. Liked the cardboard ones but they make an awful mess, the only other fabric one she would use had a drop in quality and came apart after a few uses. This is nice and tidy, no shedding of fabric, she can get her claws stuck right into it

We’ve had several types. This lasted over 2 years with one cat but that’s 2 years of heavy use bcs she loves it. We got it bcs she used to scratch our sisal rope wrapped storage trunk but this kept her away from it ever since! The pics are the old scratcher, showing how hard she uses it and how well it held up since she likes to really pull and stretch while scratching. Other styles would lift it off the floor a little then thump back down. The weight and solid rubber feet keep that from happening. It’s cheaper now too, we paid almost $60 originally but it was worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars My cats love it
Reviewed in Australia on May 28, 2023
I was a little skeptical about how something small and flat would be a good scratcher, but turns out both my cats love this more than the vertical ones which cost x3 more! One of my cats used it so much the first few days she threw up on it in her excitement... so not super easy to clean and it did leave a little stain as expected, but both cats still use it many times a day. I've had it a few months now and it looks like it's holding together surprisingly well. Worth the cost and the purchase for sure!

My cat loves this scratcher! It took her a couple of days and some catnip to get into it, but now she scratches it all the time! We used to have one of the cardboard one's, so this one is really appealing as it doesn't leave little bits of stuff everywhere. It's also pretty quiet when she's scratching it. It seems very durable too, I can't see any marks from my cat's scratching and she has been using it regularly for at least a couple of weeks. Definitely recommend!
