About USTC

The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is a world-class research-focused university that has continuously served the nation as an innovator in quality education and scientific research by focusing on exploring new frontiers in science and nurturing young talents. As a prominent university in China, USTC has been a member of the C9 League, Double First Class University Plan, Project 985, and Project 211. USTC was established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1958 with the aim of educating top talent in cutting-edge, interdisciplinary science and technology. In 1970, USTC moved to its current location in Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province from Beijing.

Schools and Disciplines

USTC has a broad range of academic disciplines covering natural sciences, engineering, management, humanities and social science, and some emerging interdisciplinary fields. These disciplines are organized across 30 schools (including 7 research institutes), 15 of which rank among ESI Global Top 1%. USTC provides an excellent research environment with world-leading research facilities for both teachers and students, including 13 national research institutions, 57 provincial and ministerial research institutions, and 25 scientific research institutions of CAS. Eleven disciplines, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geophysics, biology, history of science and technology, materials science and engineering, computer science and technology, nuclear science and technology, and safety science and engineering, have been selected for China’s “Double First-Class” initiative.

Strong Academics

Among domestic universities, USTC has the largest number of research achievements that have been acknowledged by distinguished academic authorities. Concerted efforts at USTC have pushed 15 research fields into the ranks of the ESI global top 1%. Among these, physics, chemistry, materials science, and engineering are all listed in the top 0.1% globally. Meanwhile, USTC ranks first among Chinese universities by the Nature Index. 20 discoveries/innovations have been selected into China's Annual Release of Top 10 Scientific Advances.

Additionally, USTC is the only university in China operating two national labs: the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory and the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale. It jointly operates two national "big science" facilities along with CAS institutes: the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak and the Steady High Magnetic Field of the High Magnetic Field Laboratory. It has also been instrumental in establishing the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center. In addition, Deep Space Exploration Laboratory is under construction.

Superior Research

USTC is home to the world's first quantum communications satellite "Micius", the world's first thousand-kilometer level of trunk line (the "Beijing-Shanghai Line") for secure quantum telecommunications, the optical quantum computer, iron-based superconducting, intelligent speech recognition, and a large number of other original and significant scientific and technological achievements, including a series of breakthroughs in high-temperature superconductivity, nanotechnology, as well as in interdisciplinary areas, including big data, artificial intelligence (AI), Earth and environmental sciences, and life sciences and health. It has played a key role in major national projects, such as the Wukong satellite (China’s first dark matter particle explorer), Micius mission (the world’s first quantum science experimental satellite), and Zuchongzhi (a 62-qubit programmable superconducting quantum computing prototype).

Top Education

USTC is regarded as the "Cradle of Scientific Elites" in China. Its educational principle emphasizes fundamental theories and provides students with a wide range of high-level training that incorporates emerging as well as interdisciplinary fields of study. Even though the university is small in size, it has cultivated a group of science and technology leaders, with approximately one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering per 1,000 graduates.

USTC also collaborate with CAS to pilot talent training reforms and explore the cultivation of innovation, which led to 11 elite science and technology classes, nine joint classes with CAS institutes and six joint colleges. By pioneering the Special Class for the Gifted Young 40 years ago (now the School of the Gifted Young), as well as paving the way in graduate education in China, USTC has always been a forerunner in Chinese higher education innovation.

Welcome Global Talents

The University embraces applicants of all ranks, from internationally recognized scientists who would establish their own research clusters and platforms, to junior scholars who may complement our existing research programs. USTC features, and is proud of its highly collegial, interactive, and supportive environment for researchers. The benefits include spacious housing, subsidized faculty dining, premium medical services, etc. Professors hired through the recruitment programs will receive supplementary remuneration, as well as assistance on the establishment of a dedicated research team. The start-up package includes adequate start-up funds, newly renovated office, ample laboratory space, housing benefits, etc. We sincerely invite outstanding talents from all over the world to join us!
