Its a good idea, i espically like ranking system, which could posibly be determined by blocks placed, blocks broken mobs killed, time playing, items crafted, etc etc...
It would be great to see this in the next update
Okay, these things are the only fixes I can think of:
1.Make the friends system ingame also, popping up whenever someone invites are goes online and stuff
2.Trading system for singleplayer? No way, we got lots of worlds, and this would just take away from the satisfaction of finding these things for yourself. It would be better suited if we only had one world, but sadly, trading with ingame items ain't the way to go. This could also work if we had other ingame items that would only be acquired outside of your minecraft world, but I cannot possibly think of anything.(I don't want this game to be turned like roblox and other mmos, where you buy predesigned clothes and hats.)

I'm sure someone has already said this but I'll just say it again because I can't be troubled to read through all those pages and the first post still has the ideas I think are ridiculous on it so I know know one has convinced you to change them, Rose.
Firstly, I think the world rank thing is just stupid beyond all means. What the heck is it for? Seriously? If this were a game that revolved around a certain type of competition like League of Legends or Starcraft 2 I could understand wanting world rank, but this is Minecraft, the open ended sand box game. Not only is there nothing to base the world rank on but I think it goes against the spirit of Minecraft. People create the best things in an environment with unconditional positive regard. I feel like if there is a world rank there would be a lot of "Oh, my rank is higher than yours, you must suck, you noob." The way it is now is that you don't know how good people are at creating things so you assume either that they are good or bad based on what judgments you make about them, I feel like adding a world rank would just add a lot of negativity and people just trying to increase their rank in cheap ways.
The trading thing is also just dumb, quite frankly; I really don't see the point or fun of it and I kind of think it takes away from the game. I like the idea of trading in-server between two people who are in close proximity but I don't like the idea of trading between servers or server to single player (from what I did read I know that you actually are too.) Inner server trading would be nice if you wanted to hand someone something and some trollish noob was trying to pick it up.
That's all I really have to say about this Idea. I absolutely love the whole "add friend, join their server" thing because it's pretty much standard in most games but Minecraft doesn't have it yet. I remember watching or reading something where Notch said that he wanted to implement server history and friends but hadn't got around to it yet, so let's keep our fingers crossed that it'll be sooner rather than later!
This gentleman has put my thoughts much more eloquently than I ever could have. Trading has literally no point at all in my opinion, as it is pretty easy to get whatever by yourself, unless you are in a heavy RP environment in the same server. Cross server and cross save trading is just too much in my opinion.
And I agree about the rank. It just turns Minecraft into a competitive grinder fest that takes the fun away for certain people. Sure, you can choose to not participate off course, but I genuinely don't see how it can add any depth or enjoyment to the game.
Meh, I don't see the need for it really. The trading between servers or whatever doesn't make sense to me.
The friends list? I have other programs (Steam, MSN etc) for that and I just don't get the world ranking (how would that work? Is it really needed). I don't see how connecting to your friends world would work either (If you mean singleplayer worlds)
I love it, but it will probably never get in. Notch is too lazy to implement at least one of these, or at least spend money setting up the chat and rank things.

I agree with everything besides ranks and trading.
Ranks - I think instead of ranks, they should use the stats system Notch is working on.
Trading - If you wanted to make that legit, you would have to communicate every update of your inventory to the minecraft.net server that was legit. Sure, the inventory stuff is only a Kilobyte or two...
But you must remember, they are about 1.75 million people who have bought this game. All of which can now have an unlimited number of worlds.
Shut the **** up.
You are part of the extremely small minority that doesn't like steam.
It's your opinion. Stop ****ing forcing it down people's throats.
Extremely small minority, I laughed at that one. You're assuming because all your friends use steam that the rest of the world just loooooooves it.
It's pointless, we have messengers/skype/vent/irc to chat, and I don't know about you, but I don't need a program to install games for me, I can do it quite well on my own.
Yes!!! We should also have more ways to differentiate our worlds. Maybe if we can browse for an image and that image will appear next to a world. We could also add images to a folder that we can easily access to place image markers next to the world save. Notch could include several Minecraft default ones like a creeper, zombie, player, etc. That would be awesome.
i kinda like the idea of a an update, but not the exact way you put it.
we can have a friend list with a direct skin upload and stuff, but trading single player items is a bad idea. you could use inventory editors to give yourself, say, a stack of diamonds and give that to other players.
it would be better for trading on SMP servers where you can't inventory edit, like you right click on a player to open the trade window.
and the arrows aren't very useful, you could just have a Ready button when you like what both players are offering, a Trade button to do the actual trade and a Cancel button if you don't want to trade anymore.
and maybe instead of making single player able to go online, people can visit the same server you're on.
still, i like some of the ideas that are on here. [thumbsup]

When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! GET MAD! I DON'T WANT YOUR DANG LEMONS! WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THESE?! DEMAND TO SEE LIFE'S MANAGER! Make life RUE the day it thought it could give CAVE JOHNSON LEMONS! DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?! I'M THE MAN WHO'S GONNA BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN! WITH THE LEMONS! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that BURNS YOUR HOUSE DOWN!

The pen is mightier than the sword, or in this case, the text is mightier than the troll.

Things would get messy REALLY fast.

or you could join facebook like the rest of the world.
EDIT:
i do like the trading, just not between servers. kind of like any mmo trading, same serv mail or must be next to them to trade?
Also friends list would be good, but only when beta is over.
