Google stats to know in 2024

By Robert Keenan, President, Keenan Media

Received my weekly email from NewzDash on some of the latest news in the SEO space. One of the interesting ones was a story from Ahrefs on 56 Google Search Stats that you need to know in 2024.

There's a ton of interesting information -- some of it mind blowing. Google has indexed 400 billion (that's right billion) documents! Think about this one. With all the searches in the world, 15% of Google searches have never been searched before. And my favorite -- There's an estimated 1.5 billion searches on Google a day!

While this is all interesting, the section that caught my attention is Google Discover. If you don't know Discover well, it's a mobile experience that delivers content to users based on web and app activity. It's really a powerful tool. I've seen stories picked up by Discover generate tons of traffic in a day. It's also a tool that a lot of media brands are becoming more concerned with.

The stats in the Ahref article may tell a story why. A whopping 800 million people are using Google Discover to stay updated. Of those, 46% of traffic is going to news/publication sites. And, of the discover traffic, news sites get 99% of the clicks.

Clearly, Discover can be a powerful tool for media brands. With that in mind, it's a really good idea to check out How to Optimize for Google Discover in 2024: 5 Smart Tips from Semrush . It gives a good overview of Discover and some good tips to leverage this tool.

In my mind, Google Discover, at least now, is one way we can keep our Google traffic moving forward in the age of Generative AI. So, it should be a focus of all of our SEO efforts!
