Enterprise 5G in the age of WiFi
In recent times, there has been a great deal of interest in 5G with all the major carriers announcing network upgrades in the past several months along with several smartphones supporting 5G. More recently Apple made a splash with the announcement of the 5G-capable iPhone12. At Apple’s recent announcement event, Hans Vestberg, the CEO of Verizon Communications, took to the stage to talk about his company’s 5G efforts and proclaimed, “5G just got real.”
These advancements in 5G are quite revolutionary and will usher in a whole new class of applications. A less talked about revolution is, however, taking place in enterprise wireless. Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS), a wireless “innovation band” recently made available by the FCC. For the first time ever, it enables enterprises to operate their own private 4G and 5G networks. No longer dependent on the large telecom operators, enterprises can expand their wireless capabilities to unleash innovation.
I recently wrote an article for Cervin Ventures that explores the capabilities of CBRS, its place in the market, and environments where it is more applicable than WiFi.
Shirish, gracias por compartir!
Shirish Sathaye good article and you bring up interesting points. I also think another big opportunity is retail since all of the retailers are now providing free Wifi and it costs them money and many users still don't want to login. With 5G users don't have to log in and probably in most countries, retailers may get some money from the operators for extending their reach. Also, as you pointed out, Manufacturing is another big area that will get impacted by 5G in a positive way and enable wire-free and location free connectivity.
