What we call AI is a projection of collected data and information. Human-made information and influenced data. Machine learning. It cannot be stressed enough that you shouldnt use machine learning tools blindly. Especially if you want to be fair and inclusive.

A lot of the “AI is an existential threat to humanity” is WAAAYYY over hyped. Code is (at worst) amoral…it has no thought, no ability to discern truth from fiction, it just takes in data and information and spits out algorithmic jazz (that can look super cool). However, “garbage in, garbage out” absolutely holds true. What is disturbing is a) how we tolerate it and b) the fact that AI is reflecting our own biases back at us. What is really happening is not a sci-fi AI coming to get us, it is algorithmic systemic racism. And it doesn’t start (or stop) without a long look at our collective humanity. It also only serves to benefit a literal handful of people (or maybe a handful of handfuls) (and legions of minions living off the scraps of largess). Marshal Macluhan (the great Canadian thinker and author of “the medium is the message”) has an incredible model for looking at technology…one of the four dimensions that is most interesting to me is “retrieval” - as in, what does a new technology bring back from the past. What we are seeing is manifested as a bigoted/biased output, but what is actually being retrieved is a playbook that puts the masses against each other for the benefit of a few. What the awesome Michael Robbins is writing about regularly (and worth a follow) # This manifests in other ways as well, if you are following Chinese tech, you will have noticed several platforms no longer have Israel marked on the map (but it does show Palestine) as a not so subtle (and - in my opinion - equally inappropriate as what Meta has done) act of forcing users to accept a point of view that is not rooted in reality, but in a few people’s biased views.

I wish this shocked me... But it doesn't... AI is infested with all our structural bigotries and blindspots. We cannot change this without concious (and constant) anti-racist, anti-misogyny, anti-ableism, anti-colonialism, anti-homphobia, and anti-transphobia work done at all stages of the work. It should also be recognise that this is a continual process, of active self reflection, questioning, and education, that the people with privilege need to do. Sidenote - Diversity and Inclusion is not a nice to have, or something someone should help you for free, there are people, organisations and resources out there to help you do better... contact them, and pay them.

The message and the technology made equal waves. Shotline, an AI technology platform used the voices of victims killed by gun violence to "bring them back to life" and send important message about gun law changes. Some would say it's deepfakes and unethical. Some would say how else would one make people pay attention to such grave matter. Some would say as long as there's disclosures and the intention is correct, it might be a powerful tool. Brave new world and it's here. #ai #ethicalai #technologyforgood
