Some times on some days capture the right meaning for certain words. June 6th--the anniversary of D-Day--was a great day to think about the ancient Etruscan word, "saeculum". A saeculum is the unit of time between when a major event happened and when the last person who experienced that event died. It was an important concept for the Etruscans, as they believed their own nation was granted only so many saecula. As the world gets increasingly dangerous, we're rapidly approaching closing out the saeculum of World War II--and by "we", I mean the entire world. Without that generation's perspective, how does our thinking of the myriad national security challenges change?

We hear a lot of talk about the number of abductees, but there's little connection to faces and names. So I created a video that presents the abductees (especially the very young and the very old) with their names and ages. The War Childhood Museum serves as a platform for those affected to share their experiences. Very interesting video with Palmer Luckey & Emily Chang about the current state of the defense industry in the U.S. as threats continue to evolve into a more competitive technological warfare. The belief that large-scale wars are a thing of the past has been challenged. The conflicts in Ukraine and repeated perceived threats by D.C. from China highlight the need for constant vigilance and preparedness for the US. Although, it's China vs US is a theme we hear more and more, it is clear that the World is changing and we are on the verge of really scary times. Traditional beliefs about warfare, such as the irrelevance of artillery and manpower, are outdated. Modern conflicts require agile and innovative approaches. Here are the main threats shared in this video: ** China's Ambitions: The potential for China to make moves on Taiwan and other regions within the next 24 to 48 months poses a significant threat. The US needs to be prepared for these scenarios. ** Military Lag Time: The slow response time of the US military to adapt to new strategies and technologies can leave the nation vulnerable in fast-evolving conflict situations. ** Outdated Systems: Heavy investment in legacy weapon systems that may not be effective against modern threats is a major concern. There is a need for faster adoption of innovative and relevant technologies. The current global conflicts and emerging threats emphasize the need for the US to adapt quickly and innovate continuously. Bridging the gap between recognition of the problem and actual implementation of solutions is critical for national security - probably a lot of introspection on the global policy side too before trying to fix a big problem with more money and more weapons too. https://lnkd.in/eHVyHmy3

The more we know about the goals of these international agencies/entities (UN, NATO, WEF, WHO…) the better political decisions we can make when electing who will represent us. We, Americans should not be governed by entities that we didn’t elected for!

'Heritage at War: Plan and Prepare' edited by myself, Mark Dunkley and Lisa Mol, out on 15th October 2024! Security can, and must, collaborate to give primacy to people and protect tangible and intangible cultural heritage under attack. The volume’s case studies highlight interdisciplinary efforts to protect heritage in conflict zones, drawing out guidance for those working in the Heritage Sector in these contexts, with specific relevance to those engaged in cultural heritage protection and those working in related interdisciplinary fields. Reviewing the historic relationship between heritage and armed conflict, and offering lessons for present-day practitioners, Heritage at War shows how, in different contexts, heritage can be a catalyst and target of conflict, an obstacle to stabilisation, and yet also a potential vector of peace-building and the return to normality. Threat Assessment & Security for Entertainment Venues Would you be interested and willing to be an interview subject for a research study based on your experience and expertise in team-based threat assessment and security work for entertainment venues? The study––funded by Department of Homeland Security Office of the Chief Financial Officer and led by researchers from the National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology, and Education Center (NCITE) ––is designed to understand how threat assessment practitioners collaborate (e.g., collect intelligence, share information, deliberate, divide roles, manage processes, use tools) to protect common music venues such as concert halls, arenas, and casinos. The research team would speak with you for approximately one hour (60 minutes) in a semi-structured interview format, and you would be compensated $50 for your time.
