I had the pleasure of speaking at the J.P. Morgan Hedge Fund COO of Tomorrow Conference on the application of Generative AI in hedge fund workflows. Along with my co-panelists Gareth Mills, CTO at Segantii and Kevin Pereira, MD at Blu we covered use cases, opportunities, risks of GenAI. Thank you Krisch Ramchandani for moderating the panel and a well organized event! Key takeaways: 1. Not trading any time soon - LLM sweet spot is in content rich domains - use cases related to compliance, legal documentation, marketing content all present lower hanging fruit before embedding in to trading automation. 2. Larger not necessarily better - Smaller and domain specific models could produce better results for Finance. Don't get caught up in the hype of next giant model. 3. Don't forget your Data - with the general availability of LLM technology, the competitive differentiation would come from the ability to embed data in to the models through techniques like RAG. Most of you are probably familiar with Ray Dalio, but for those who aren’t, let me introduce you to this influential figure. Dalio is the founder of Bridgewater Associates, not just a leading name in the hedge fund world but also the largest, managing an impressive $196.83 billion in assets. What truly fascinates me about Dalio, as with many successful investors, is their utilization of diverse mental models and scientific approaches. Dalio, in particular, has an acute focus on historical patterns and what they can teach us about current and future market behaviors. I recently watched his masterclass and, while it provided a general overview of his thought process, the depth and breadth of his historical understanding were compelling. This perspective is particularly enlightening, considering that the existence of stock markets is relatively brief compared to the long span of human evolution. It’s a potent reminder that, despite technological advancements and evolving market scenarios, human behavior in these contexts remains largely consistent. This historical lens offers an invaluable viewpoint for understanding present market trends and behaviors.
