“We know these fans will work really hard to see women’s sports. They’ve had to work hard forever. And as this next generation of fans come in, and we continue to grow the pie, we need to make sure that we’re continuing to serve them as they want to be served.” Shelley Pisarra, EVP, Global Insights, spoke to WPLN about accommodating the growing number of invested women’s sports fans, as the number of bars dedicated to women’s leagues continues to rise: https://lnkd.in/e_MAuFcq

“We’ve gotten used to being okay with women’s sports and women’s sports fans being an afterthought, which is no longer okay... People are no longer okay with having to ask and beg to be recognized” Women's football has grown so fast in the UK, and systems just haven't been able to, or have opted not to, keep up with demand. Our top teams are still playing on pitches designed for 5th tier mens teams Our finals are still being hosted at stadiums with 5k capacity Our games get 4% of broadcast coverage, despite being 40% of participants The intersection between sport and space is so interesting. It's a sign of who gets platformed, of who gets to literally take up space. And so promising to see women's sports bars beginning to pop-up to (highly recommend article linked). And with 2 grassroots venues closing in the UK ever week, there's a huge, positive, meaningful role that brands can play here. To act as a connecter between sports fans, often new to the game or sports fandom in general, and the sport they want to connect with. https://lnkd.in/gMU2b-t4

Angel City FC gets a record-breaking valuation It’s always great to see a sports team owned by its fans, but this isn’t like the Green Bay Packers. Hollywood power couple and OG Angel City FC fans, TV journalist Willow Bay and her husband, Disney CEO Bob Iger, finalized a deal to buy the LA-based women’s soccer team. The sale values the club at $250 million, making it the most valuable women’s sports team in the world. Some details of the agreement: Bay and Iger will invest $50 million and take controlling ownership from Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Bay will lead the board and represent ACFC on the National Women’s Soccer League’s Board of Governors. All existing owners—a group that reads like the invite list to Oprah’s birthday party—will continue to be involved, including Natalie Portman (a co-founder), Billie Jean King, and former USWNT players such as Abby Wambach and Mia Hamm. Show me the money: Bay predicts that ACFC can ride growing interest and investment in women’s sports to a $1 billion valuation in the “modestly near term.” The team generated $33 million in revenue last year, the most of any women’s sports team in the world (according to the team), and was No. 1 in NWSL attendance and sponsorship revenue. But it’s not without its devils…the team ranks 11th out of 14 teams this season and has been dogged by reports of infighting.—CC https://lnkd.in/eWbiTPiN

We are still buzzing from our time at last week's US Sports Congress at L'Auberge Lake Charles in Visit Lake Charles- Louisiana's Playground - Thanks Lou Mengsol, CSEE, SMP & Eric Zartler, CDME, TMP !! Figuratively, of course. We went down on a mission to learn as much as possible from all the major players in our industry, and boy, they delivered. We are so excited to share what we were able to capture, but for now, here are a few high-level key takeaways: Mission and Margin (courtesy of Rick Mack) With Private Equity entering the youth sports space, we had many insightful discussions about whether this would be good or bad, particularly regarding the tournament experience for young athletes. Though we don’t hold a crystal ball, we truly have nothing but faith in a bright future for youth sports based on the passion and commitment of those we spent time with last week to deliver exceptional experiences to young athletes. At EventConnect, with the data and transparency we aim to provide all stakeholders in youth sports, our goal is to be the tide that raises all boats, most notably that of the young athlete. Measuring Resident and Partner Sentiment (courtesy of Josh Dill, STS) On the destination side, our industry has traditionally centered around one key data point, Room Nights Booked. But some of the most innovative people in the room last week weren’t just looking at immediate quotas and trying to put heads in beds. They were thinking about building long-term sustainable relationships with rights holders who host events that truly strengthen all aspects of their communities. We are excited to sink our teeth into this new data consideration, which only points to a growing need to host high-caliber consistent events. Relationships Over and over again, we heard about the importance of relationships in making our industry tick, and we couldn’t share this sentiment more. From our oldest partners to the folks we met for the first time last week, we truly believe this industry is full of the most amazing people (see above Mission over Margin). Thank you to everyone who sat down and recorded a podcast with us, attended one of our presentations, or just said hello! We are excited to share the unique insights we gathered at an epic conference. For those who attended, what were your main takeaways?
