Amid mass layoffs and shutdowns due to a prolonged funding winter, April brought some cheer as startups raised $1.1 billion across 115 private equity and venture capital transactions, the highest monthly deal value since October 2023. Moreover, the deal volume at 115 during the month was also the highest since September 2022, according to proprietary data compiled by DealStreetAsia. The numbers also marked a marginal jump over March when startups collectively garnered $1.06 billion across 87 transactions. On a year-on-year basis, the deal value in April was up 10% sequentially, while deal volume rose almost 60%, the data revealed. We often confuse Venture Capitalists with Angel investors. Angel investors put money into the business ideas, which may come on the ground or not. They help ideas to turn into ventures. But Venture Capitalists put money into the ventures created from the ideas. They intent to make profits on exit. They also put pressure to perform and scale up fast so that they can exit with hefty profits. At times they turn into vultures forcing the founders to exit. India badly needs Angel investors to bring more research and development ideas turning into ventures.

EXIT! 2023 was a difficult year for our 43 startup companies and angel investors in our nine Westside Startup Funds. Last year was the lowest merger and acquisition year in 10 years and the 4000 or so private equity and venture capital firms raised the lowest amount since 2007-2009. No wonder there were so few exit’s last year which would have given our startups and investors a return on their investments and hard work. We are optimistic that with the downward trend in interest rates will translate to more acquisitions for startups in 2024. We have several companies in our portfolio that are great potential exit candidates, such as ToolBelt, TrovaTrip, Liquidwire, Keliomics, and others. Let’s hope we hear that 4 letter word often in 2024! EXIT, EXIT, EXIT.
