I I spent last week connecting with other leaders at SPIE’s Photonics Industry Summit in DC where we heard from #optics and #photonics experts from The White House and it started to become evident that there was an opportunity for us to have some straight talk to add value to the group. So, with 100+ leaders of leading photonics companies in the room representing “boots on the ground” in our industry, I took the opportunity to ask some meaningful, albeit candid questions, about how the #CHIPSact legislation is being implemented. After all, only through a transparent dialogue can we come together to strategize meaningful solutions. For those of you who aren’t following the CHIPS & Science Act, the goal of this $280 Billion bipartisan legislation is to position the U.S. as the semiconductor manufacturing global powerhouse, create jobs, and strengthen our national security. After sharing some of my concerns based on our experiences at Photodigm, I received support from other leaders in and after the sessions which affirms that my “straight-talk” resonated with many others in the room. One panel member went so far as to refer to me as “the Gentleman from Texas asking the tough questions”, ha! But that’s just it, isn’t it? Sometimes we've got to ask the tough questions to get to the heart of the matter and figure out a way forward together, regardless of the topic at hand. As a growing company with a very hands-on leadership team, at Photodigm we value transparency with our customers, shareholders, and business partners. And, we know its become harder to answer touch questions without being stereotyped and cancelled. The number of texts I received thanking me for asking the question everyone wanted to know but no-one wanted to ask was much appreciated but also very concerning - we are afraid to ask common sense questions. My question, "For smaller companies it's becoming clear that the CHIPs act is becoming aspirational not inspirational as the money seems to be flowing top down not bottom up (per the agenda we both support). When can small companies get a real sense of what is going on?" So, for those of you who reached out to thank me afterward (from LinkedIn messages to high-fives, ha!), I’m glad to know we are in the same boat and that you’re in on straight-talk and solutions. It’s great to make new friends and I’m always willing to hop on a call or connect at Photonics West in a few months to keep talking about how we can all work together on real issues. Bill aka “The Gentleman from Texas” PS - we were informed later that day our request for CHIPs funding was denied.

Back from #ISESEUPower2024: my thoughts after many inspiring conversations in Lisbon. At the first panel session I took part in, we discussed the collaborative efforts needed to drive the global #EV market forward. The car of tomorrow will be safer, greener, and fully autonomous, addressing current supply-chain challenges and bringing unprecedented production efficiency and performance, thanks to @SOITEC’s SmartSiC™. Cars are now transforming into smartphones, supercomputers, and power stations all in one. The automotive #semiconductor segment is forecast to grow at an annual rate of over 10% between 2020 and 2030, with our technologies at the forefront of this revolution. My second panel session tackled the progress and challenges of #GaN technologies, focusing on the exploration of promising wide-bandgap technologies expected to emerge in the next five years. We are at the forefront of #innovation with our solution SmartGaN™, which showcases our commitment to leading industry standards. At Soitec, we are proud to be at the heart of these crucial moments, contributing with all our teams to the next generation of mobile communications and the growing electric vehicle market. A big thank you to International Semiconductor Executive Summits for the organization and all the other panel participants for the engaging discussions and valuable insights. https://lnkd.in/gDJkHCkx

Last week, our U.S. colleague, Hans Arts, joined forces with 50 Dutch and Flemish semiconductor firms and knowledge institutes on the Netherlands- Flanders Economic Mission to Phoenix (Silicon Desert) and San Francisco (Silicon Valley). It was a week filled with inspiration, strengthened collaborations, and new connections with U.S. companies and institutes. In the #Semiconductor industry, we’re living in exciting times. Global #semiconductors revenue is projected to surge by 16.8% in 2024, reaching a total of $624 billion, according to Gartner. As #chips become strategically more important than ever, close collaboration between industry leaders is vital to shape tomorrow’s world and drive innovation in the #Semicon industry. #Fastmicro is at the forefront of this change. Our metrology technology plays a pivotal role in combating rising manufacturing costs and the industry’s increasing carbon footprint. Our fast surface particle inspection solutions enable more frequent and earlier inspections in the production line and total value chain. This approach enhances yield, reduces costs, and minimizes waste. A big thank you to the Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat, Mark Rutte, Jan Jambon Micky Adriaansens for spearheading this mission. And a heartfelt thanks to all the participating companies and institutions for making this week truly remarkable! Full Gartner article with more background via the link https://lnkd.in/eNb3mj3j
