What other organization outside of the DoD has a supporting non-profit that offers next-to-no questions asked interest-free loans and grants? Active Duty friends and colleagues, consider this: Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society is almost entirely volunteer-run, with 90% of donations going directly to Sailors, Marines, and their families. It gave out 50 million just last year alone. Unfortunately though, annual donations continue to decline. Last year's fund drive only received $750,000 from Hampton Roads Area commands. We can turn this around though! With as little as $5 per month, per service member, NMCRS could collect well over 18 million during this year's campaign. Please consider donating this year via your command's representative. Your contribution could rescue a fellow Sailor or Marine in dire straits! #nmcrs #adfd #usnavy #nonprofit

We’ve got a problem. The demand for support from bereaved military families far, far outstrips what we at Scotty’s can afford. We can’t keep up. We need to generate £2m this year just to stand still and yet there are over 2,000 children bereaved of a parent who served every year. What you can do to help… ➡️ Can your business sign up to our Business Heroes Club? It’s £250/£500/£1k a month. ➡️ Could you nominate Scotty’s as your company’s charity of the year? ➡️ Can you afford to make a small donation? ➡️ How about fundraising at the Scotty’s March? ➡️ Or what about donating a % of sales from a product line? Together we can provide the support our bereaved military families deserve, but we need your help 🙌

A few personal opinions I think most military families can agree with-- 1. Don't pity or victimize me just because our lives are different. 2. If you want to know about a potential conflict watch the news and educate yourself. Don't ask military families. 3. If people wanted to they would, and a lot of the time they don't. 4. I can be supportive of the military and frustrated with our government. 5. You're not going to guilt me for 'benefits'-- the recruiting station is open to everyone. 6. Not all individuals who serve in the military are morally upright. 7. People only care about the military when it directly affects them. 8. Don't ask intrusive questions about deployments or combat experiences unless we offer to share. 9. Recognize the sacrifices made by military families, not just the service members themselves. Spouses and children often bear significant burdens as well. 10. Military families appreciate genuine support and understanding, not just during times of conflict or crisis, but as part of our everyday lives.

💡 Food for thought 💡 In April 2023, the most recent estimation of the value of a volunteer hour was reported as $31.80 by Independent Sector with the Do-Good Institute. During Operation Homefront's Back-to-School Brigade Season, Region 6 East volunteers contributed over 760 volunteer hours. Using the reported metrics, their support towards our mission would be valued at $24,168. **Note that this number is much larger as it typically does not include Dollar Tree campaign hours and unreported hours. ** This is just data from half of a region, now consider this number and imagine the value at a national level. In Tidewater, the Hampton Roads area of Virginia is relatively unknown nationwide, but it is the region whose vulnerability to sea level rise most affects military readiness and our overall national security. With 14 military installations spread across 17 local jurisdictions, it is our highest concentration of military assets in the country, where 1 in 6 residents are associated with our nation’s defense. Their homes, schools, hospitals, and families are increasingly struggling to keep up with the effects of rising waters, and the military and all the surrounding municipalities are working towards solutions in the name of strengthening national security and enhancing economic prosperity. Filmmaker Roger Sorkin demonstrates that an innovative whole-of-government problem-solving model being attempted by local and military leaders is the only way to ensure the continued strength of our national security, along with the continued prosperity of the region and the nation. Honoring Our Heroes: A Social Story for Memorial Day What is Memorial Day? It's a special day in the United States (on the last Monday of May) to remember all the brave men and women who served in the military. These are people who wear uniforms and protect our country. Why do we remember them? ️ Some of these heroes fought in battles to keep us safe, and some might not be here anymore because they died protecting our freedom. How do we celebrate? We visit cemeteries (special places where people are buried) to place flowers on their graves. We might see parades with flags and people in uniforms. (Flags represent America!) What can you do? Help hang a flag! Draw pictures to thank veterans! The holiday season digs up a lot of unresolved sediment in many first responders and military personnel, both active duty and retired, and it’s important to reach out. Struggling silently is not a solution. It is a strain that eventually has consequences physically, emotionally, cognitively and behaviorally. Make this year the year you step up, speak up, and get help. This goes for departments too. Reach out, get training, we are here to help you.
