The University of Georgia Terry College of Business is remembering the legendary Francis “Abit” Massey (’49 BBA), who passed away Saturday. He was 96. A great gentleman in every sense of the word. Abit Massey touched so very many of us and proved to be a great role model in so many ways. Deeply honored to have known and spent time with him and will forever hold him in the very highest regard. Anyone’s path he crossed was so very fortunate and so very much better for it. Abit was such an inspiration. It did not matter who you were or how you knew him, he always greeted you with a smile and he truly wanted to know how you were doing. He taught us all how to be better humans.

Abit was a truly inspiring leader, shaping the poultry industry and supporting research as tool to improve the poultry industry to stay competitive in the market. He had visions and was forward thinking. Thanks Abit, also for the great crab hunting experiences at the beach. My boys still remember. Thanks for all of the above.

Soon after I moved to Gainesville , GA I met Abit Massey. The immediate respect I experienced increased greatly as I became more aware of his professional accomplishments and community service. He created a lasting legacy at the highest level.

A forward thinking man. He started and help promote the use of technology in Georgia poultry supporting Research at GTRI the research arm of GaTech. I worked on that program as a Graguate student and then I was hired. That was my first Job! May his memory be eternal.

Yesterday, at the age of 105, Virginia “Ginger” Hislop graduated from Stanford University Graduate School of Education with her master’s degree. When she started on campus in 1936, her plan was to get her bachelor’s of education, which she did in 1940, and obtain her master’s of education so she could teach, which she started directly after. However, just after completing her coursework and before turning in her final thesis, her then-boyfriend George Hislop, ’41, a GSE student in Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC), got called in to serve during World War II, prompting the pair to get married and Virginia Hislop to leave campus before graduating. Now – 83 years after leaving campus and living in service to learning – Virginia Hislop returned to Stanford to finish what she started and receive her graduate degree. When she rose from her seat at the ceremony, donned in cap and gown, to walk across the stage and receive her master’s hood, the applause roared. Some of you may know that George M. Smerk, Jr., distinguished professor of transportation at Indiana University, author, and public transportation expert, passed away last year. RT&S just recently learned about George's passing, and we published a brief feature and obituary on our website yesterday. This should be normalized in todays world. In todays world we should be going back to school many times over. If you doubt it. Take a look at the business decisions being made around you. On the job training isn’t working out too well, is it? I mean sure. You can scrape some people off the bottom of Fiverr’s shoe and get a little work done. What happens when you have to actually solve problems with perspective, history, and a developed ventromedial prefrontal cortex? I said it that way because I can. For people who want plain speech and louder for those in the back. It’s a part of the brain implicated in transcendent thinking and if it isn’t stimulated and intentionally developed it atrophies. For really literally minded people: let me spell it out. The mental activities that you do don’t have to directly impact the skills you need to do your job to help. (There is nothing wrong with being literal. I have the opposite problem.) In fact, studying the humanities if you are in STEM and STEM if you are in the humanities is necessary cross-training. It’s called indirect training, or transfer of training , or transfer of learning. Take your pick. Olympic swimmers row, cycle, and dance. They never roe, cyclr, and dance in competition. It’s a thing. Trust me. It doesn’t have to be in formal universities and it definitely doesn’t have to lead to degrees. But you have to provide it if you want your teams to maintain an edge and you want to retain them. Remember that? Employee retention? On the job education and training ? Those were the days, Archie. #continuouslearning

An Excellent example of tenacity, dedication, drive, motivation, courage, determination, and commitment towards achieving something you set your mind to do in life, regardless of how “old” or how “young” you actually may be or feel?~For Virginia to be able to re-engage at such a level as Stanford University’s Graduate School or any institution for that matter 83 years later, is truly remarkable indeed. I’d say she is a new, yet old generational “Founder” of “Inspirational Resolve Incorporated” and worthy of a VC’s Capital Investment 💵 to say the least, and to teach a “Master’s Class” on actually becoming a Master of “Education”. No need for a quick IPO for ROI, enough returns on attendance level in the very “first class” room booked!
