As someone who works for the betterment of people through a diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, I cussed real cuss words when I heard about the SHRM announcement today. Burying equity into inclusion until it...disappears? Now, admittedly, I've never been part of the SHRM community especially after wondering how one organization's certification dictates the qualifications of how we take care of people in the workplace and witnessing some people with those qualifications reluctant to embrace how HR should be evolving to encompass new ideas on how we take care of people. My friends Morgan Williams, 🏡 Kim Rohrer and Tracie Sponenberg posted some great thought pieces today on this as HR professionals who are dedicated to be part of the movement of evolving HR while I just cussed. I don't want to be part of a group that constantly decides to not hear the critiques and the please to be better. Luckily we don't all have to join one group to do that.

The last few years SHRM has truly been a disappointment for the HR community but to see them removing equity from their offerings is harmful. Inclusion or equality without equity takes us back. What’s the difference you may ask? Remember when there was a pizza party at school and you got those tiny little pieces well think about getting a tiny piece of pizza and everyone around you got half a pie. That’s the difference. Removing equity isn’t the answer and only fuels pay inequity and other gaps. I’m completely enraged that SHRM put out a public statement like this with a minority CEO at the helm of the organization. At a time where it’s pivotal to stand firm in DEI views the literal society of HR decides to go along with harmful discourse. If you’re in HR and are interested in building inclusive, equitable, progressive programs check us out at PeakHR where we stand behind our values and the betterment of HR. Not the highest bidder.
