The early years are crucial for developing foundational skills, but chronic absenteeism is rampant in kindergarten classrooms across the country. In California, more than 1 in 3 kindergarteners miss so much school they are deemed chronically absent. The reasons are complex. Parents struggle to determine if a child is too sick to attend. Lingering pandemic guidance to keep ill children home compounds the issue, even as schools work to improve attendance. The good news? Schools are taking action.
