We still have a few days left in London Fashion Week before we head into Milan Fashion Week but can already start to see a few trends forming... Now just because we are starting to see these trends on the runway doesn't mean buyers will buy into them, which makes them accessible to the public. A lot of hard work in editorial, styling, campaigns, celebrity collaborations, influencer marketing and so many more industry pros need to do their thing to make a trend a thing people want to be a part of. Think of these as seeds that now need to be nurtured to grow into full blown trends. This can take months to catch on or be immediate. Seeing the trends spread and get picked up and reinterpreted in everyday life will be the fun part. Here are a few trends I have spotted so far... You need to have these skills as a Social Media Marketer That Zara did not. ‘Compassion’ and ‘global awareness’ Recently Zara launched a campaign 'The Jacket' part of the brand's Atelier series,  which was created to promote a new collection of jackets. The campaign features  → a model standing among rubble → carrying a mannequin wrapped in white cloth  → some other mannequins with missing limbs. → statues covered in white sheets → even a broken wall resembling the Palestine map The audience called out this campaign saying that there’s a shocking resemblance with the recent conflict between Israel and Gaza that killed thousands of people People on X started using the hashtag "# BoycottZara"  and thousands of comments flooded their Instagram posts. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received 100 complaints about this. Zara did put down the images and called it a misunderstanding. They said, the campaign was conceived in July and photographed in September and was meant to show unfinished sculptures in a sculptor's studio But, the damage was already done. In 2023, social media is more powerful than ever and whatever you put out has a potential to reach millions. So brands need to be considerate of their campaigns. And be aware of the socio-political situation of the world. Whether it was intentional or not, it was definitely stupid. It costed them $11 billion in value due to declining sales, strikes, and other factors. So before you hit the post button, THINK. The next segment in our COMPASS Index Q1 2024 is Watch and Jewelry. The list includes brands that generate most of their revenue from Watch and Jewelry sales, and therefore brands such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton are included in Fashion and Leather goods instead of here. The ranking itself offers insights into how brands are performing, in China, across social media platforms WeChat, XiaoHongShu, Weibo, and Douyin. What did we learn from this quarter’s goings on: 💍Cartier takes the overall top spot for the first time since we calculated our index. The first quarter was full of activations surrounding the 100th anniversary of their Trinity collection – the brand leveraged a multitude of influencers including Jackson Wang to drive significant engagement in the market. 💍Qeelin rose from 16th to 7th in this quarter, the first time a Chinese brand in either ranking has broken into the top 10. Its success is due in large part to the partnering with Zhang Yixin, but it also had some strong activations centered around its dragon boat parade in Guilin during CNY. 💍Zenith presents somewhat a return to form after slipping down to 26th place in Q4 2023, rising to 17th overall in Q1 2024. The brand leveraged its on-going relationship with luxury influence powerhouse Xiao Zhang to drive engagement during the quarter. 💍Both Boucheron and Chopard slip out of our top 10 this quarter, after having successful Q4 activations. However, Boucheron shows signs of maintaining its recent found fame through Xiao Zhan last 11.11, with a 9-place difference this quarter versus the same last year (21st 2023, vs 12th 2024).
