When I taught high school science, the month of September was a time to establish boundaries with my class. What I learned was students (and people) appreciate consistency and confidentiality. Consistency meant if I said something, I would follow through. Consistency meant they saw that I played no favourites. I would actually tell the class I was going to memorize everyone’s name in 2 classes (approximately 210 names total), because I wanted to show that everyone belonged in the classroom. How can you apply consistency in mentorship? - Timely follow-up or replies - Following through on meeting Consistency could also be thought of a long period of time. Are you being consistent in what you offer to mentees over many years? Are you being fair in your expectations from person to person? Consistency means when people are first starting to get to know you, consistency helps build a boundary of safety—they know what to expect from you with each interaction. Ralph Waldo Emerson knew 150 years ago that adults learn mostly from their peers and by themselves. “You send your child to the schoolmaster, but ’tis the schoolboys who educate him.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Culture,” The Conduct of Life (1860). How many times have you tried to implement something, shift culture, change the way you complete tasks for it seemingly to fall on death ears 👂? How many times have you hired a new team member who you feel will energize the team and change the way you do things for them quickly to comply to the status quo? It’s time that our learning and development at work reflects this and recognizes that everyone has a role to play. We learn from our peers and are influenced by them. Empowering all team members to be leaders from this respect and for support to be a non negotiable element of our culture. We also need to support team members to learn independently. This can be by providing on demand materials, connections and networks. #learninganddevelopment #learningdesign

Out of everything in today's Chronicle article on applied research, this quote hit me the hardest. Connecting one's academic work to the world beyond disciplinary boundaries ought to be a career builder. Instead, too often, reactions like this happen. Stuff like this is what I would call anti-mentoring, and it ought to be extinct by now. And yet, here we are - a place where accomplished, energetic, community-minded scholars can still be thoroughly squashed under the weight of their advisors' narrow-minded expectations. https://lnkd.in/gMCu775R

As you begin planning PD for next school year, where in your plans are you intentionally holding space for high leverage and evidence based practices like building complementary partnerships and cultivating collective efficacy? School leader, as you are begin brainstorming your plans for PD, ask yourself: 🤔 What might it look like to design and implement a professional development plan that uniquely supports my general education and special education staff with forming complementary partnerships in service of teaching diverse learners? 🤔 How might guiding my teachers to see the collective impact they can have as a team lead to more positive outcomes for students with IEPs in my school?

I spent time this week in middle school ELA classrooms and with school leaders. We focused on implementing standards-aligned curriculum. 📚I was reminded of a few key things: 📈This work requires a long view and a laser focus on student-centered goals. How are students experiencing teaching and learning? Is their learning growth on grade-level? 🧑🏻🏫 Teachers work hard and want their students to do well. They deserve school leaders that support intellectual preparation and collaboration. This means leaders need to take things OFF teachers plates to make room for the meaningful work. 🏫 Schools can be human centered places that honor the brilliance of students. This means educators have to 1) believe students come with assets and 2) trust them to do hard work over long periods of time. 🧑🏽🎓Middle school students are super fun.
