As a “women-led” business you’d think we’d find it easy to speak on topics relating to female empowerment and inclusivity - especially within the workplace. And most of the time we do! But equally, we have on occasion found ourselves shying away from highlighting our “womanhood” in relation to business. Surely our being women shouldn’t matter? Surely we are simply “business leaders” and “career professionals”? But on reflection, so much of STORY22’s ethos and what we pride ourselves on has come about as a result of our experiences as women in the world of work. And as the theme of this year’s International Women's Day rightly suggests, in order to create a more gender-equal and inclusive society it’s important to acknowledge the barriers that still persist in holding women back from achieving true gender parity - and try to do something about them! Most of our team are women, juggling careers with families, other businesses, and passions. As a company, we have endeavoured to create an environment that not only embraces this but actively encourages it. From our inception, we’ve offered flexible work arrangements and unlimited leave to all our team and have as a result seen first-hand just how valuable creating an accessible and inclusive space for women is. Far from being a hindrance to a business’s success, by including women at the table in a way that truly works for them you can create a business that doesn’t just survive, but thrives. To ensure that initiatives aimed at empowering women yield meaningful results, it's crucial to establish clear objectives, define the desired impact, and align these efforts with the organisation's overall strategy. This distinction between a mere tactic (tickbox exercise) and a strategic initiative lies in the clarity of purpose and alignment with broader goals. So, how can organisations effectively empower women in the workplace? Firstly, it's essential to clearly understand what an empowered workplace for women looks like. Recognizing the complexity of gender intersectionality, women are not a monolith and this must be recognised if there is to be true gender equity for all women. Attention must be paid to various areas such as hiring practices, equitable development opportunities, and ensuring fair compensation. Once this vision is established, data becomes a valuable tool for assessing the current landscape and identifying areas for improvement. Data-driven insights provide the foundation for formulating a strategic roadmap to drive necessary changes. It's important to acknowledge that effecting meaningful change will not happen overnight. Creating a strategic roadmap requires deliberate planning, sustained effort, and a commitment to long-term progress.
