International Literacy Day has been recognized since 1967. While literacy has increased, at least 763 million young people and adults still lacked basic literacy skills as of 2020. #Literacy and #education are fundamental to Community Action Agencies through Early Head Start, Head Start and adult education classes. In times of global calamity and deep division, service is often the greatest salve. It's hard to continue with "business as usual" in life, let alone on LinkedIn, when the world faces deep challenges. But when we are in service to others, our greatest opportunity each day is to continue our work. The world's nonprofits are more important than ever, especially during difficult times. And so the leadership of those organizations, and board service in particular, means everything. When we speak from experience on Nonprofit Board Growth, Development & Engagement, we don't speak only from our Beyond Advisers experience supporting our clients—we also speak from personal board service. With the Two Bit Circus Foundation, I'm privileged to support creation of STEAM-powered creativity for kids, classrooms, and communities. As part of the U.S. Soccer Foundation Leadership Council, Amy Curran and I support children in underserved communities gain opportunities and coaching that lasts a lifetime. On the Chicago Kent College of Law Alumni board, I add my insights to help support the future of the most innovative law school in the country so that it can educate a new generation of legal change makers. In the past, I’ve been a board member, adviser, and/or secretary to the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, Imagination.org, Walt Disney Birthplace and others, all of which have grown themselves and helped me become better in my work, life, and creative endeavors. As the end of the year approaches, we’re taking a moment to reflect. Last night, I had the opportunity to review scholarship applications for some outstanding young people, each with different backgrounds and future plans. Thank you to the Saginaw Community Foundation for putting together such a simple process and giving reviewers ample time and guidance. Over the years, I've completed both paid and volunteer review projects, for nonprofits, foundations, and government agencies. Nothing makes my writing better than reading. Today is Giving Tuesday. There are two nonprofits that I would like to draw folks' attention to, in no particular order: The Appellate Project: Their mission is to empower law students of color to thrive in the appellate field. When appellate courts are making decisions that impact large swaths of folks, those appellate court decision makers and advocates should reflect the communities impacted. Through direct mentorship, access to notoriously exclusive appellate networks, and invitations to apply for appellate experiences, TAP seeks to grow the appellate bar in a way that furthers this vision of community reflection. Through advocacy, public education, programming, and innovative legal technology, they work to increase transparency, diversity, and accountability in judicial clerkships, the judiciary, and the legal profession generally. Specifically, they are building a centralized database of reviews from former clerks on their clerkship experiences, both positive and negative, to help applicants discern which clerkships would be right for them. Partnerships might include mentorship programs through local businesses and chambers of commerce or hosting philanthropic events through nonprofit organizations. Students learn more about the communities in which they live and are provided with volunteer opportunities. Community members, even those without students in schools, are made aware of these programs and will continue to support public education.
