A big thank you to the TIAA summer interns I met with yesterday (thanks to Geoffrey C. of our Early Talent Team for facilitating). This dynamic group of interns brought great energy and came prepared with insightful questions about TIAA’s Wealth Management business, career progression in a corporate environment, and work-life balance. I offered a few tips to help them get the most out of their internship – learn new skills, grow existing ones, and connect with as many people as possible to expand their network. One of my favorite parts of the discussion was when we talked about the importance of personal brand. A key question to consider when reflecting on your brand is, “what do people say about me when I am not in the room?” Each person and the skills and qualities they possess are an individual’s brand. Seasonally we're approaching the end of the hot phase of summer internships where it's key to convert the chance of gaining some on the ground experience into a real graduate job at the major investment banks and boutiques.  We have been helping interns on understanding hierarchies and identifying decision makers. Making sure you're in front of teams with actual head count to fill has been a major challenge in recent years.
