Decarbonizing the transportation sector is going to take more than just vehicle electrification. We need a "yes, and..." approach that includes electrification and long-term policy solutions that make us less car-dependent. A recent op-ed that I co-wrote with Patrick McClellan and Varanesh Singh discusses one such policy. Published in the Times Union this past weekend, the piece discusses a bill sponsored by Sens Brad Hoylman-Sigal and Andrew S. Gounardes in the New York State Senate. The bill seeks to replace the use of Level of Service (LOS) with Vehicle Miles Travelled (VMT) in the state's environmental review process. This is common sense legislation that will help align the state's development with its climate goals, reducing car dependency while still improving mobility and enabling more housing development. The Port of Detroit, the state’s largest inland port, is taking action to reduce its environmental impact. 🌏 In partnership with Tunley Engineering and Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision (SDEV), they're launching a decarbonization project, an initiative involving renewable energy, electrifying port equipment, and adopting cleaner fuels. Residents and businesses in the area will have a say in the project too. New national performance measures from the Federal Highway Administration went into effect this month, building on MAP-21 and the FAST Act. These measures require state DOTs and MPOs to adopt stricter greenhouse gas (GHG) performance measures, focusing on fuel sales, CO2 per gallon, and on-road vehicle miles traveled (VMT). VisionEval, a common framework for strategic planning models, analyzes numerous scenarios to quantify the GHG impact of different investment strategies. It can offer insights into the potential decline in fuel sales due to increased vehicle electrification and VMT variations linked to demographic and land-use changes. 🌱 An Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC) study confirms that public transit positively impacts the local environment 🌍 The latest report sheds light on the pivotal role of public transit in mitigating carbon emissions in the region. The use of public transportation over individual motorized vehicles reduces up to 160,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year! 🔍 Key Findings: 🚌 Public transit in Northern Virginia reduces 120,000 to 160,000 metric tons of CO2 annually. 🌿 All bus fuel types, including diesel, offer significant environmental benefits compared to personal vehicles. 🤝 Opportunities exist for jurisdictions and transit agencies to collaborate on eco-friendly policies. 📈 Short- and medium-term goals include increasing ridership, optimizing transit routes to reduce idle time and emissions, and expanding transit infrastructure to meet growing demand. 🌟 "Encouraging public transit usage not only reduces emissions but also alleviates traffic congestion, ensuring a cleaner, more sustainable Northern Virginia," said NVTC Chair Matt de Ferranti. #PublicTransit #ClimateAction #Sustainability #BetterCities https://lnkd.in/efuN-8vu
