Is culture important for a venture capitalist? Listen to Sushma Kaushik of Aavishkaar Capital, a pioneer impact investor. In early stage investing, understanding what kind of culture a CXO team will build is a core for predicting whether it will stand the test of time. In M&A, 'money follows, but a sense of purpose, values and communications is what keeps people together'. Concentration in early-stage venture capital requires an investor to have significant skill to pick a winner in an asset class where the winners only occur roughly 2% of the time in any given vintage year. These winners typically take anywhere from 7-10 years to truly develop. Additionally, the winners emerge from the tail in venture capital and having a portfolio of 50 deals can allow a GP to take some more high-risk bets versus a portfolio of 20-25 deals, where losses have a significant impact to the overall return.
