CEO, Co-Founder at EVPowerInsights | Accelerating charging infrastructure ⚡️

While everyone is talking about Tesla’s Supercharge network, I’m watching General Motors. Last week GM’s CEO Mary Barra spoke at the Detroit Economic Club. She described EV adoption as a “once-in-a-generation type of transformation.” In this interview she discussed; - EV adoption challenges - Charging station partnerships - Charging infrastructure concerns - Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill funding GM views the lack of sufficient charging infrastructure in the US as a major challenge to mass EV adoption. Here's what they're doing about it; - Investing $750M in charging infrastructure through various partnerships - Building 2,000 charging stalls nationwide with EVgo and Pilot Flying J   - Installing (with EVgo) an additional 3,250 stalls by 2025 (1,000+ already installed) - Installing 40,000 chargers at local dealers through the Dealer Community Charging Program While Tesla is dominant in the modern EV market, GM has been in the game for 20+ years -- they built the first mass-produced EV (the EV1) back in 1996. Expect to see GM continue to play an increasingly large role in charging infrastructure.

Maybe it will be different for GM this time, but firing up the way back machine about GM's commitment and vision for fast charging vs the Supercharger network: From CEO Mary Barra in 2016 and filed under 'not our job': "We are not actively working on providing infrastructure [for the Bolt EV]." While GM and other legacies in the North America dithered and did nothing, Tesla invested billions and built the most available and reliable DCFC network on the continent.

$750mn investment in charging, $10bn in share buybacks. Hard to conclude from that disparity that GM is really taking the e-mobility revolution seriously (or indeed genuinely believes charging is a great business for an OEM to be in), rather than just bleeding out its remaining cash cows as it sunsets the company in tandem with the ICE...

I'd like to hear more about her plans for dealerships. Hyundai has acknowledged the friction that comes with dealerships and the difficulty of converting EV sales. https://pluggedin.substack.com/p/kia-and-hyundai-may-have-the-cracked

The state of the charger network for non-Teslas falls squarely on Mary Barra’s shoulders. It is one of the issues that EV adoption is lower than it should be in NA. The other is the resistance that their dealer network has to EVs. You can’t sell something that you don’t believe in. Don’t worry, there are believers out there, and they will be around in the long term.

Maybe an equally important question is: how do they intend to combat/mitigate theft of charging cables for the copper inside at these charging stations.........

Mary Barra is one of my all-time heroes. She is truly leading the way for legacy OEMs on the path to electrification. I so admire her rising to the top of such a behemoth organization. From a co-op student to CEO is an amazing trajectory (though sadly not as possible these days due to it being more difficult to have tenures that long at an org).

I’ve talked with a couple mid-level product managers… do you think GM will stay the course, at least through the rest of this year, for BEVs and Charging Infrastructure?

Does she mention anything about Ionna the collaboration EV company with all the big automotive companies?

Thanks for sharing this clip. I think Mary Barra is A+! Is more of her talk available somewhere?
