Rachel Green, the iconic character from Friends, taught us more than just fashion. Throughout the show's 10 seasons, her career journey provided valuable insights into professional growth and pursuing goals. Starting with no clear direction or formal education, Rachel took a job as a waiter to make ends meet. Despite feeling lost, she understood the importance of starting somewhere. Eventually, Rachel made a bold career change and landed an assistant job at Fortunata Fashions. This opportunity opened doors for her in the fashion industry, leading to positions at Bloomingdale's and Ralph Lauren, and catching the attention of prestigious brands like Gucci and Louis Vuitton. While her series finale decision may have been controversial, there are valuable career lessons we can learn from Rachel Green: ➡️Take one step at a time: Rachel embraced each opportunity to grow in her career, even if it meant starting from the bottom. ➡️Be patient with the process: She understood that success doesn't happen overnight and progressed at her own pace. ➡️ Be clear about what you want: Rachel took the time to reflect on her dissatisfaction with her waiting job and pursued a career in a field that resonated with her interests and values. ➡️ Don't settle for a job you don't like: If you're unhappy, and have the means to pursue something else, create a plan and change directions. ➡️ Networking is important: Rachel's first job and some subsequent career opportunities came from people she knew. In today’s installment of brands and why we’re loyal to them, I submit my love for “Life is Good” apparel. I’ve been a customer for probably close to two decades. It all began with my (now very bedraggled) pink “One Love” t-shirt and continues through to the latest additions I purchased last weekend. Why I am so loyal to this brand?   ☑ Cute, quality merch ☑ Mission that aligns with my values …and the clincher for me?  ☑ That tiny little tag on every shirt that says:   DO WHAT YOU LOVE. LOVE WHAT YOU DO.   We could endlessly debate whether it’s solid advice – and more importantly, whether a t-shirt tag should serve as your career North Star. But here’s the thing: I’ve spent a lot of time the past few years questioning my decisions to remain in roles perhaps longer than I “should” for my career trajectory because I was still finding new challenges and enjoying tackling them.   Did it hamper my career and financial “advancement?” Probably. Was I continuing to grow and feel fulfilled? Absolutely. Is reasonable to find validation for my career decisions on a t-shirt tag? ⭐️Early Career in Fashion⭐️ Lessons Learned at 14 My first weekend and holiday job was in sales. I worked for Sheravi, a designer fashion house in Green Street, London. I loved my job. I earned £20 a day and relished the opportunity to embody our brand’s essence. I was often given outfits for free because my boss saw sales boost every time I wore the attire😁😁 that was one of the perks. Other perks included meeting many Bollywood celebrities🤩 Working there taught me a lot. I organised events like fashions shows and once was asked to interview and hire models. I interviewed a South Asian girl with peroxide hair, visible tattoos, and piercings in her brows, who did not fit the image we wanted. She was rude when I didn’t select her. She even threatend to beat me up. Interestingly she came back the following year with a changed image and a friendlier attitude. She must have received feedback that her image was affecting her job prospects. This experience taught me about balancing brand image and fairness. Was I being unfair, or was I protecting the brand? I know I could have been a little more compassionate towards her. She really needed the money, she was 18 and living in a hostel, disowned by her family. Remembering this experience make me wonder about professionalism and the complexities of personal expression in the workplace. These early lessons have been invaluable in my journey.
