An article about Yale Law School's Launchpad Scholars program powered by Latham & Watkins with profiles of inspiring veterans Desaree Edwards (Navy) and Getulio Gonzalez-Mulattieri (Air Force). "At its core, this collaborative effort has an altruistic mission: to provide underrepresented students from across the country unprecedented access to support, resources, and guidance regarding law school admissions.” "The 25 Launchpad Scholars come from nine states and Washington, D.C. and bring a variety of backgrounds and experiences to the program. Eighty percent of the class are students without a parent who graduated from a four-year, U.S. institution. Forty percent grew up in families where English was not the primary language spoken at home. The cohort includes three veterans and several students with STEM backgrounds, including one student pursuing a Ph.D. in computer science. Some students attended community college before transferring to four-year institutions, and two are former foster youth." Applications for the second cohort will open in Spring 2024.

Can you imagine an evening with graduates from all years since 1978 gather? I visited the one at UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law last weekend and was impressed. Fantastic celebration of 50th anniversary and reunion 2023. You register, come to the school and connect with current first-class faculty, professors you missed. Then sit back and enjoy the celebratory screening of the film that chronicles the law school’s first 50-years. Featuring tributes to the law school from Chief Justice Gordon MacDonald of the NH Supreme Court and Judge Ray Chen of the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. Then mingle with your classmates from different countries during cocktail event, DJ, dancing and fun. Unusual for a school, isn't it? This school does not afraid to be courageous. Once the school took the risk of specializing only in intellectual property and now it is one of the best IP schools. Taking risks means refusing to participate in rankings of law schools. This is what the school did last year. In fact, I don’t know whether this is the right decision, but it’s definitely a bold one.

I asked five law students what difficult internal conversations they’re avoiding with themselves and here’s what they had to say: —I keep telling myself I’ll work on my fitness routine once [the reading is done, once finals are over, once I’m done with the bar]. But I don’t. I keep eating poorly and not working out. I know I need to set myself straight but I’m believing that law school stress keeps me unfit. —I’m uncomfortable at my law school because I’m the only Black law student in my section and one of three in my entire class. I need to stand up for myself and own my place or transfer out but I let discomfort keep me from deciding. The internal conversation cycle drains me. —I need to work through and tell myself that the little girl in me would be proud. —I need to accept [my late mother’s] flaws and tell myself that she is proud of me, from heaven. I’m avoiding this topic like the plague. —Lisa, I’ve never considered having a conversation with myself. When you asked me this, I honestly stared at the screen… The depth these students poured into answering this question floored me—I wish I could include the entirety of their responses and beautiful reflections. Jordyn McTavish graduated with a BA in History from Florida State University in spring of 2022. She just completed her first year at FSU’s law school. In this interview, McTavish shares how she prepared for law school and what sets law school apart from undergrad. Her thoughts on having been a History major in undergrad: "Law is a good option for History students. And History is a good option for students wanting to do law.
