Unconscious biases in entrepreneurship often put founders at a disadvantage. Camilla Cloëtta Falkenberg, co-founder of Female Invest, sheds light on this in a recent panel. It is not fair that Female founders need to spend so much time and energy answering questions that their male counterparts would never be asked. And it's frustrating that this often takes up the time that could be spent diving deeper into a startup's viability. We see the results of this all the time. There's a reason women led businesses raise less than 2% of VC funding. In an ideal world, female founders wouldn't be asked intrusive/ unrelated questions and solutions made by women for women are seen as viable businesses. We need systemic change, but that is such a slow process. This is what inspired us to explore how early stage founders could solve this affordably - and storytelling seems to be the answer. Focus on crafting compelling brand stories, incorporating stats, research, and market trends. The aim? Making your problem statement relatable, irrespective of who's listening. Let's spark change by reshaping the conversation around businesses. Women always tend to excel, and Aruzhan Mede is no exception. Allow me to share a remarkable moment from last year's Astana Hub Battle at the Digital Bridge, where she truly stood out. Before her, some startup founders struggled to answer questions about their startup's evaluation when Tim Draper or Mikhail Lomtadze inquired. The founders provided unclear responses, relying on other startup evaluations in the same field with less to offer. The jury noted this pattern, but when Aruzhan faced the same question, she handled it with finesse. Her response resonated, shedding light on why her startup had a specific evaluation – feedback from a Kazakhstani fund. The jury was left speechless. In that moment, I realized the power that women possess in navigating challenges. Yes, it can be exhausting, but the demand for more from us opens doors to clear opportunities. I was genuinely impressed, and when Aruzhan invited me to work as a consultant for Ecom School, I had every reason to say yes. Collaborating with two women entrepreneurs brought me immense joy and reminded me of my student activities in the women's empowerment field. Accelerator Frankfurt celebrates International Women’s Day! Did you know that only 20% of all startup founders are women? And that female-founded startups only receive about 1% of the VC funding volume in Europe?* We started the Empowered Female Founders program to change that. Not only because we want more diversity and inclusivity in the wold of startups. There are also several studies showing that female entrepreneurs on average outperform male-founded startups.** This might be because women statistically tend to be more risk-averse. But it is also harder for female-founders to receive funding, partially because the vast majority of VC’s and business angels are male. And people are more likely to invest into people that are similar to them.
