QUESTION. What do you think about the solutions put forth in this article regarding the huge recruitment & retention issue in most police departments? They suggest modifying standards, better recruiting and getting better at competing for same candidates versus other agencies. In my opinion we should always look at recruitment strategies and standards, but…. There has always been a gap of trust & legitimacy between certain segments of society and law enforcement- and last seceral years has just increased the divide. Some do not believe law enforcement is a noble profession. We must add to the strategy or face more of the same. We must build trust & legitimacy or no recruitment effort will help. We must find ways to expand experiences and build understanding, compassion and trust between officers and community. #AWayForward #BeTheDifference #History #TOGETHERwebuild

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost testified Tuesday afternoon before the House Criminal Justice Committee in support of legislation that would expand the eligibility of human trafficking survivors to have their criminal records expunged. House Bill 385 would remove the predicate requirement for those applying for expungement of fourth- and fifth-degree felonies and all misdemeanors. A criminal record is very common for trafficking victims, and it stands as a major roadblock to their recovery and ability to seek gainful employment, stable housing, and more. The Collaborative and members of the Coordinated Response work with survivors to provide mental health counseling and housing assistance. Nevertheless, prior convictions prevent survivors from rebuilding a better life and remain a constant reminder of their abuse. At every job interview, they must explain the circumstances of their victimization, which re-traumatizes them and makes potential employers uncomfortable. Expanded opportunities for expungement are needed so that survivors can move past their victimization toward a brighter future. How do we ensure that the police resources are more effectively directed towards serious and violent crimes? Our latest report, "Dispatching Community Responders to 911 callers," introduces the trained professionals focused on de-escalation, conflict resolution, and connecting individuals to community-based services. Your city has the infrastructure to build a Community Responder model, but 911 call centers will need to change policy and practice for this model to be effective. accesSOS contributes in this report with Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP) and Policing Project at NYU Law. #CommunityResponders #PublicSafety #InnovativePolicing #SocialChange

Police departments facing 'historic crisis' in finding, keeping officers should make changes: DOJ report. While I agree the industry is facing a "historic crisis," Why does the discussion always center around lowering standards versus increasing professionalism? The article below linked states: The report came in the wake of hiring problems from the COVID-19 pandemic, a tightening labor market and community frustrations with police. According to the survey by the Police Executive Research Forum, the total number of sworn officers dropped from 83,497 in January 2020 to 79,464 in January. According to the survey, hiring has begun to rebound, from 4,889 in 2020 to 6,759 last year. Recommendations in the report include modernizing eligibility requirements and streamlining hiring. For example, a prohibition against hiring a candidate with a criminal record could remain, but a requirement for the candidate to meet physical fitness standards could be postponed until training at the police academy.
