Rackham is here to help! Meet Rackham's new embedded University Career Center Ph.D. Career Coach, Tim Cavnar. Q. What do you do for Rackham students, Tim? A. As a Ph.D. Career Coach, I support Ph.D. students who are asking some scary questions: Can I even find a job? Is my degree applicable to non-academic professions? I can answer a resounding "Yes!" to both questions. It's my job to provide support, advice, and tons of positive energy to students in this difficult (but exciting!) transition period. Q. What resource do you wish more Rackham students knew about? A. I think grad students as a whole should be networking more, and earlier. (I certainly wish I had.) The chance to connect with people with similar life trajectories is invaluable, allowing you to brainstorm, envision possible futures for yourself, and ask questions from a sympathetic person. I would recommend for grad students to spend some time exploring UCAN, our amazing alumni network, where you can connect with alumni on similar life paths. Tim's Fun Fact: As both a linguist and English major, I love words. My favorite word is "pentasyllabic," because it's pentasyllabic! This week, we had the privilege of visiting several of our partner campuses around Texas. A highlight of the trip was getting to speak to a group of students - at their request! - to discuss career opportunities and trajectory upon completion of our curriculum. This conversation highlighted the importance of work-based learning opportunities for students. One student knew exactly what she wanted to do and only needed some input on how to order the steps she plans to take. One student really isn't sure what he wants to do and could benefit from exposure to different environments to see what sparks his interest. Another knows the general field she wants to pursue; while she isn't sure where she wants to focus within that field, she beautifully articulated the work environment that she knows will help her thrive. The more we can provide students the opportunity to engage with the workforce, the more they can align their education choices to pursue the right career, saving both time and money spent exploring. Next week, we will look more at how this serves not only students, but employers as well. #AdvanceCTE #CTEMonth #WorkBasedLearning

DOES COLLEGE REALLY MATTER IN THE LONG RUN⁉️ Let’s address the elephant in the room: “College Prestige” People from 3rd tier colleges often fear that there aren’t enough opportunities for them. It’s true that college matters initially, but over time, its significance fades unless you’re in a field where credentials or funding are crucial, like starting a startup. You can't change what has happened in the past, but you can always shape your future by working hard today. I've been following people on LinkedIn who come from 3rd tier colleges, even from institutions I've never heard of, and they started small but are now working in big companies like FAANG and the Big 4s, achieving everything they dreamed of. To all my peers from 3rd tier colleges, don’t be disheartened. Your college is just the starting point. What matters most is your dedication, perseverance, and the skills you build along the way. The past is unchangeable, but the future is wide open you are just 22-23 right now. Ditch the college anxiety and channel that energy into learning new things, building an impressive portfolio, and networking like crazy(i mean crazy). Remember, the world needs talented individuals, regardless of the college logo on their resume. Let your hustle do the talking and prove that you’re capable of greatness. Let’s keep pushing boundaries and proving that where we come from does not limit where we can go. #careeradvice #motivation #hardwork #SuccessStory #LinkedInCommunity #CollegeDoesNotDefineYou #BigDreams #AchieveYourGoals #niche

When it comes to choosing societies at University, it's natural to feel unsure about which ones will best groom you for future placements. To make an informed decision, I suggest considering joining two societies that align with your interests and goals. Remember, it's not about quantity but quality. First and foremost, prioritize joining your COLLEGE'S PLACEMENT CELL. The benefits of being a part of the Placement Cell are immense- ☑️They provide numerous opportunities to interact with companies ☑️Participate in tasks that enhance your CV Keep you updated about job openings. ☑️ Increase your chances of securing a desirable placement. For your second society, choose one that ALIGNS WITH YOUR INTERESTS AND ASPIRATIONS. If you have a passion for entrepreneurship and startups, consider joining the Entrepreneurship Cell. This society will provide you with the necessary guidance, mentorship, and networking opportunities to pursue your entrepreneurial endeavors. On the other hand, if you have a penchant for social work, you may opt for the National Social Service Society. This society offers avenues to engage in meaningful social projects and contribute to the community. Remember, the key is to select societies that genuinely interest you and allow you to develop valuable skills. Engaging in activities that you are passionate about will enhance your personal growth. In conclusion, make joining the Placement Cell a priority and select another society based on your interests. By striking this balance, you will gain- ☑️Valuable experiences ☑️Expand your network ☑️Securing a promising placement. Good luck! #LPUcareerplanning #MittalSchoolofBusiness #LovelyProfessionalUniversity

I am a Business Forward Council Member at the Silicon Valley Capital Club. We had a sponsored breakfast panel this morning on Creating New Pathways to Careers in which we discussed workforce development in a world where traditional career trajectories are no longer the "norm". As a part of this discussion I learned that there are some programs offered at local community colleges here in #siliconvalley to fund high school and college interns get work experience and work credits. For example, a community college would fund up to 50% of the salary of the intern and the host company would pay the other 50%. There is also a huge expansion of vocational programs to enable rapid entry of candidates into careers in high tech modern #manufacturing (specically companies like Tesla offer these programs). #rechargeday #education #newworldorder #businessforward Live The Dream Network, Inc https://lnkd.in/grrWB96m
